Mad Hatters Inspired Afternoon Tea

alice in wonderland afternoon tea

On Sunday I went along to the Sanderson Hotel just off Oxford Street to experience their wonderful Mad Hatters afternoon tea. I’ve known about this for a while after a friend of mine went about a year ago but with booking being quite tight and this year disappearing i’ve only just managed to go. The Mad Hatters/ Alice in Wonderland theme was only basic but it was enough to feel special without being tacky. There’s always quite a worry about how far a theme can go but this hit the spot perfectly.

Every detail was so perfectly thought about and I was excited just from sitting down at our table from the menu placed in the middle of an old book and sugar cubes inside a working musical jewellery box to the riddles surrounding the napkins and the pocket watch on my plate. We were presented with four bottles of tea leaves to choose from and this was the part I was dreading. In simple term I don’t like tea, never have and although this seemed to undermine half the idea of afternoon tea I thought I’d give it a go. The options they gave us were Strawberry’s and cream, mint chocolate, apple pie and rhubarb and custard and I had mint chocolate (because I thought it would taste least like tea) and my friend went for strawberry and cream. Now I won’t be rushing out to order tea next time I’m out but it was pleasant, and from a non tea drinker that’s a compliment. FYI if you love tea you’ll love this, my friend is obsessed and she was in her element.

Next came the food and in all honesty the pictures above give a better idea of what it was like than I can explain. And yes everything tasted just as amazing as it looked. The quantities weren’t massive but it was enough to fill you up without you feeling ill. At the end of the meal we were given two glasses of champagne and were told they were on the house; instantly I felt quite bad for those who had paid an extra £10 per head for the champagne afternoon tea (especially as we didn’t even drink it!)

The basic afternoon worked out at just under £44 per person so if you’re looking for something special then this is a definite recommendation.
