There are a few Alchemist bars scattered around the country but the London one is situated in Shoreditch less than a five minute walk from Liverpool Street Station. My first introduction to the bar was just before Christmas when we went for a friends birthday and understandably it was heaving but we went back early afternoon last Saturday and found it was pretty empty.
The bar itself is really nice with plenty of places to sit and a massive bar area but it’s what they serve they makes this place truly unique. A lot of the cocktails involve an element of science to them; we saw a bartender don Science googles cooking a cocktail on top of a bunsen burner and another pair of girls with drinks in beakers bellowing so much dry ice that you could barely see the drink itself.
Last time we went my friend had a colour changing cocktail that you mixed yourself and when the two liquids combined it changed from reds to blues to greens. This time I ordered a Wow Woo which was meant to be a slight twist on the traditional woo-woo (I know i’m a creature of habit!) The drink literally sparkled, every time you moved your straw it in streams of orangey glitter flowed through the red liquid. The picture I took above doesn’t do it justice at all but trust me that it was amazing.
Not all the cocktails tasted fantastic- one of my friends even had one topped with black pepper- but that’s a risk you take with cocktails. But the way the drinks were presented made up for it. The cocktails range from £7-£10 for a single drink which for central London is pretty standard.
Make sure you head along and look out for the drinks which state ‘added surprises’ or similar as ingredients. You won’t be disappointed.
