My Geek Box: My First Non Beauty Subscription Box

my geek box

We’ve all heard (and probably tried) one of the millions of beauty subscription boxes available, but these boxes don’t stop there. You can get book subscriptions with a new book a month, tea subscriptions, period boxes to cover your time of the month, monthly alcohol boxes (great idea) and loads more. I wanted something a little different so I did some research and stumbled across My Geek Box. Having received my first month I did a little research online for others thoughts on the box as I’m generally pretty nosy, but they seemed to be few and far between which is why I knew I had to write this post.

I watched loads of the un-boxing videos from previous months and made a decision to buy one for November. I was swayed because it came with a free welcome box and a little 10% voucher I found online. Previous months themes have included Villains, Gaming and TV and and they had already released the theme for November which was Film. To me Film is a little too open a genre, perhaps limiting it to Sci Fi Films, or Action Films might have been better. Because surely they’re going to run out of ideas soon?!

When the box arrived I was so excited to open it up. The boxes are pretty big and any post is generally exciting, but I have never been more disappointed with a package than I was with this, and it pains me to say so. I really don’t like being negative but there was little to make me smile about the box. (This might be why it’s taken me a little while to actually write this post).

Each month you receive a t-shirt and every month they’ve been awesome looking t-shirts but mine was a plain white one which just said ‘Jaws’. Really uninspiring stuff, and the rest of the items were pretty much a miss as well. There was a scratchy black scarf and I didn’t even understand the relevance of it, a Ted keyring which was okay, A little James Bond comic and a gadget CD.

I know with subscription boxes they can be hit or miss but there was nothing in this box that even made me think ‘”Yeah I’m glad I ordered this”.

I decided to cancel my subscription and not carry on (for the time being) but I still hadn’t had my allusive welcome box which I was promised and technically ordered. It’s been over a month since I got my November box and this still hasn’t turned up so maybe it’s just a marketing ploy to get you to part with your cash in the hope you forget about it. Either way I’m sad to say this wasn’t a box for me.

Have you tried any non-beauty subscription boxes? What did you think of them?

  • Oh what a shame! I think I must be the only person not to have subscribed to any monthly gift box, I love the idea of them though. I think my boys might have enjoyed this one with James Bond inside.

    • I like trying out products and things so they are good for that but I might need to do some more research into these before making a decision x

  • I was really disappointed with this box too. The t-shirt size was all wrong (despite the size guide) and they kept being late. I think I will stick with the more reputable boxes from now on!

    • Glad it wasn't just me. Yeah my tshirt seemed quite small too x

  • I think if the box was more specific as you say about the genre it would be better – action films, romantic films and so on.

    • You're more likely to get the products inside if they're more specifically themed as well x

  • I haven't tried any subscription box yet but I will like to. I'm just not sure which one to subscribe to

    • It depends what you like/ want to try as there are boxes for everything at the moment. Beauty/ skin care/ hair care/ perfume/ lifestyle/ food and drink and more x

  • My sister would probably love this. She isn't into her beauty really. Nice to see other versions if subscription boxes! X

    • Yeah you can get boxes for pretty much everything now! x

  • I've not tried a non beauty box before, but I think I might, this one looks great – thanks for sharing x

    • I wouldn't recommend this one though. If you're going to go for a non-beauty one really shop around! x

  • Aw it's such a shame you didn't enjoy this – I've seen some quite good ones in the past. I guess it can be very hit and miss depending on your interests – nothing in this box would really fit with mine, whereas past boxes have had things that have really impressed me!

    Milly // Mini Adventures

    • That's exactly how I felt, maybe i'll try another brand and see how they work out x

  • Oh wow this looks really awesome – my OH would love this box – never knew about it before – thanks so much for sharing

    Laura x

    • You're welcome. The themes are hit and miss depending on your interests though x

  • Oh no that sucks that it didnt work out for you! I really want to try the japaneese themed box, hoping santa will bring me a subscription 😉

    • Oh a Japanese themed box, that sounds interesting. Definitely need to look into these in more detail in 2016. x

  • The boys I work with sub to this box and I have to admit, I have seen better boxes x

    • It's just a shame when your first one isn't quite right x

  • How disappointing! I remember looking into this box back when I first heard about Loot Crate. Glad I didn't go for it! x

    • I want to look at Loot Crate, although I don't know about shipping costs. x

  • It's a shame but the tee has a nice retro look about it!
    Liquid Grain

  • Oh that's such a shame! Getting post really is so exciting, but opening it to things you're not really fond of is a bit disappointing. I hope you find the right subscription box for you! x

    • Thanks, i'll have to have another search in the New Year x

  • that looks really nice. I remeber my first beauty box and what excitemnt it was! Happy xmas!

    • Beauty boxes have opened my eyes to so many new products it's great x
