A Delve Into My World Of Liquid Eyeliners

A Delve Into My World Of Liquid Eyeliners

Eyeliner is definitely the item that I have been using for the longest time, from my teenage ’emo’ phase where I had massive thick lines of black eyeliner on both the top and bottom lash lines right through to the current day where I do not leave the house without at least some eyeliner one. If I had to pick just one makeup this would be tied with foundation at my ultimate makeup item.

I went through a phase of using lots of gel eyeliners when I discovered the Mac pots and they were all I used for ages but now I am well and truly a liquid liner convert ranging from the thick black lines to the glittery colours for evening wear. There are quite a few coloured ones which I have not included on this list because they’re just quite old and really I should just throw them away. Due to the sheer volume of my collection I have had to separate out all of my pencil eyeliners so I’ll do a separate post on them at a later date.

Black Liners

Eyeko Skinny Liquid Eyeliner £12

I used to think that this liner was absolutely amazing (probably because it was the first liner I used which had the felt tip design nib) over time I have realised that it isn’t quite as amazing as I first thought. The colour I have swatched has come out quite browny but it is black but it is a very light and not overly dark in pigmentation. The nib drags a little bit and compared to a lot of other eyeliners I’ve tried it just doesn’t meet the mark.

Soap and Glory Supercat Fat £7

When I first bought this eyeliner I remember thinking it was the best thing in the world but since then I have realised that it is just too thick. Like a chunky kids crayon it is pretty thick and it takes a lot of determination to not just paint my entire eyelid. Much like the other eyeliner from Soap and Glory though it is a great quality product it’s just too thick for my needs anymore, although I’m sure if I had this 10 years ago I’d have been all over it.

Soap and Glory Supercat £6

Moving on from the above product the Supercat standard eyeliner is one of my most used eyeliners because is just does the job of lining my eye perfectly. It’s easy to apply even if you aren’t an eyeliner whizz and because it is easy to remove with a cotton wool bud if you just get that cat eye flick a bit wonky (almost every time). When it does dry properly it is there for the duration of the day without budge. The best quality eyeliner I’ve had from a drugstore brand, and for under a tenner you can’t go wrong

Kat Von D Tattoo Liner in Trooper $19

At the moment this is probably my go to liner for so many reasons. The nib on the end of the wand is really short which means it is easy to draw on the line with so I can opt for quite a thin line if I want without it going wavy. The colour always comes out a dark black and you don’t need to almost colour it in as it is darkly pigmented. This liner is one of my longest lasting liners and will withstand even the heaviest rain or the toughest gym class. I am looking forward to grabbing a brown version of this when I head to the States later this year.

Rimmel Glam Eyes Liquid £5.29

I’ve been wearing thick black eyeliner since my teenage years of being a misunderstood emo kid and nothing seems to have changed. Yes the lines may have got slightly thinner but they’re still there. Therefore I have used a lot of drugstore eyeliners over the years when my teenage funds could not afford nicer brands. Sadly this eyeliner is not one of those I will be using again because of it’s application. The wand is very long and the brush at the end is so flexible that it moves around so much when you are trying to apply it. The colour is really dark, pigmented and long lasting when you can get it on but it takes a long time to get anything which looks even halfway decent.

Benefit They’re Real Push-Up Liner £18.50

I go through phases with this eyeliner. Although this is a gel liner rather than a liquid I had to mention it here because it applies much more like a liquid. We’ve probably all heard about Benefit’s They’re Real eyeliner, some hail it as the best thing ever and others just don’t care. I’m sat very much in the middle. I love the fact that it’s a deep dark jet black and the longevity is amazing, so much so that the only thing I can get it off with is the Benefit They’re Real Remover (good one guys) but the application is so tricky. I find when I pump up the gel nothing comes out and then all of sudden half a tub full does so I can’t draw it on like the pen is meant to be used and I have to use my eyeliner brush and draw it on that way. I have a few of these in my drawer so the liklihood is I will use it again but it isn’t the first one I reach for.

Loreal Paris Super Liner Black ‘n’ Sculpt £6.99

This is a pretty recent addition to my eyeliner collection as I was intrigued about the ball at the end of the nib. The ball essential helps the eyeliner apply more evenly and I have found it useful when getting the lines on each eye of similar thickness as I put the ball at the edge of my lash line and keep it straight. The ball does mean that sometimes my eyeliner comes out a little thicker than I’d like but it’s something I’m happy to forgive it for because other than that it’s spot on: super dark (check), long lasting (check) and comes out without the need for dragging (check).

MUA Felt Liner (Not on the swatches) £2

I always like to give things a chance so despite this being so cheap I thought why not i’ll go for it, but I wish I hadn’t bothered. This is probably single handedly the worst eyeliner I have ever tried. Drawing it on was like using an old felt tip pen, you know when the colours starting to go dry and you feel like you’re having to drag it to get any colour. And the colour isn’t even black it’s like a worn out black. Even though when I draw it on my hand to stimulate the colour it comes out reasonably well and dark, this does not translate on the lid. I rarely ever throw away makeup but after trying two versions of this a few times they headed straight into my bin!

Coloured and Glitter Liners

Nars Eyeliner Stylo in Koala £20.50

I’d been searching for a dark grey eyeliner for ages and Nars seemed like the best option but sadly it’s the only Nars product which I think is a bit naff. When drawing it on my hand it comes out a deep dark grey but in reality it just doesn’t come out like they on the eyelid and it comes through as quite a light grey which wasn’t what I wanted when I originally bought it which is a shame. Because it isn’t dark it therefore doesn’t stay on the lid very well and it just doesn’t do what I want it to do.

Kiko Super colour Liner 103 (Brown)/ 104 (Dark Slate Green) and Kiko Liquid Intense in 01 £6.90

There is something about these kiko liners which are amazing. The wands are super thin which mean it is quite easy to do a very thin line and despite their length they don’t move so much that you can’t draw a straight line. Both versions I have (which includes a brown and a dark green) are beautiful colours and each one hugely pigmented. Another great score for Kiko.

Stila Sparkle Waterproof Liquid in Sequins £14

I’d wanted a sparkly black liquid eyeliner for ages and when a brand calls one sequins it’s hard to miss it. This glides on really easily and is a dark pigmented black with just enough sparkle for it to look special but without looking over the top. The wand had a short nib which meant that it was easy to apply and just a great product. Stila are one of those brands who I think are highly underated but I always love popping into Marks and Spencers to check out their products.

Sephora  Long-lasting Eyeliner in Glitter Black $12

This is an eyeliner which I have had for quite a while and one of the few which I have bought replacements for. This glitter black line is a subtle line of sparkle but not really something you can wear on its own. How I tend to use it is by putting it on top of the super black eyeliner I’ve been wearing all day to freshen up my look and bring the look from daytime to evening. The brush is tight so it doesn’t move too much when applying and it’s enough of a sparkle to make an impact. Plus it works out at around £8 for the liner which is great. I’ll be picking up some more shades when I head to New York later this year.

Great review. Loved looking at the swatches. I use Rimmel most times.

My daughter is experimenting with liquid eyeliner at the moment – I will show her this brilliant round up and your thoughts, thank you. Kaz x

  3. March 11, 2016 / 8:07 pm

I tend to just pick up a random liquid eyeliner whenever I need it, I only really use it on a night out and I tend to have a lot of luck with buying decent ones but I should really invest in a better quality one. I like the sound of the Kat Von D Tattoo Liner in Trooper one! x

See I just can not use the liquid eye-liner and I have watched every you tube video ever made and copied and copied and it just makes me look like a panda

  5. March 12, 2016 / 12:45 pm

As a natural ginger with invisible eyelashes I really ought to experiment with eyeliners and mascara more. These look great!

  6. March 12, 2016 / 8:36 pm

Thank you for this review, I love my eyeliners but have never used a liquid one and something I have been looking at for a while now, I now have a few to mark off my list x

  7. March 12, 2016 / 9:26 pm

I can’t use ‘pen’ liners. I want to as they seem much easier!
I use the thinnest little bush for mine, it’s around 5 hairs thick..I still mess up on my left eye! xx

I love a good eyeliner but I just can’t get on with a liquid or pen one, I always seem to either make the line too thick or smudge it.

I love black eyeliner, catflick eyeliner is my staple makeup look. My favourite has to be either the Soap and Glory one you mentioned or a Collection one from Boots. I definitely prefer pen to liquid or gel.

  10. March 13, 2016 / 5:34 pm

I’ve never got on with liquid eyeliners as you need a steady hand, I do love my eyeliner though x

I cannot bear to use any eye make up at all. I hate having anything near my eyes and will cringe if I see anyone applying it. I saw a woman doing it on a moving bus the other day! What if she slipped?

Been using the Loreal Paris Super Liner Black ‘n’ Sculp and it’s good that you will buy it again. 😉

  13. March 14, 2016 / 10:13 am

Woah so many liners! The L’Oreal eyeliners have always been my go-to and never let me down 🙂

Wow you have a lot of eyeliners. I have used the benefit one, but It doesn’t come out of the tube very well. I like the sound of the Stila sparkling eyeliner. I may have to pop into M and S and have a look.

SO many people I know rave about the Kat Von D liner!
I hate it when it’s always a product you can’t get here that easily!

I have never used eye-liner, although I’d lov eot. I’m totally blind and pretty clumsy so I can hardly apply makeup. If I used eye-liner, I’d use black a lot too.

  17. March 14, 2016 / 10:25 pm

Wow, you definitely have plenty of eyeliners! This is such a useful post, I need to try some new ones so will go by your recommendations, seems you’re an expert! 🙂

I only have one, a Bobbi Brown one, I prefer a pencil than a liquid liner as I always make a real mess.

  19. March 15, 2016 / 2:42 pm

Love this post! I’m also a massive fan of the liquid liner. My favorite at the moment is the Kat Von D one. I really want to try the Soap & Glory one xo

I agree that eyeliners are my go to make up item. It’s crazy how a simple black line on my eyelid can make me feel so much more confident haha

I’ll have to look out for the Kat Von D one. I normally use Loreal, but I agree the MUA is rubbish!

Wow what a collection!!! I particularly love the Soap and Glory Supercat one, always gets such a great finish and it’s so reasonably priced! xx
