I am the worst person for fizzy drinks, I drink them like there’s no tomorrow, although I did use to be worse. A few years ago every single thing I drank was fizzy whether it was 8 o clock in the morning, lunch time, or midnight it was generally Pepsi max (or an equivalent). I did an experiment for a month where I completely cut them out and went cold turkey and I genuinely felt like how I’d image a drug addict feels. I couldn’t keep my eyes open past about 9 o clock in the evening (considering I’m usually up post-midnight), I had massive headaches all the time and I just didn’t feel like me. Fast forward a few years and I feel more balanced. Fizzy drinks still play a large role in my drinking habits but they’re not all-encompassing. Although I can still go through a 2 litre bottle in an evening no problem.
Karma Cola are a brand I’d not really heard much of before I received their beautiful package of drinks*. I received a lemony lemonade, a gingerella and a Karma Cola, but these are different to your normal fizzy drinks as they’re both organic and fair trade. The brand won ‘The World’s Fairest Trader’ in 2014 awarded by Fairtrade International and a share of the profits are pumped back into the people of Boma to re-establish their lives in the aftermath of civil war and the ebola crisis.
One of the things which struck me most about the drinks when I received them, was the retro feel of them. The glass bottles were beautiful and the prints on them were really vibrant and fun.
I wasn’t expecting the Cola to taste much like cola because let’s face it things which are better for us or the environment generally don’t and it’s made from real cola nuts, but I was so surprised at the traditional cola taste. The gingerella had a real tang to it and is a great alternative to ginger ale. The one though which I was most excited to try was the lemonade because let’s face it who doesn’t love lemonade?! It’s created from fair trade organically grown lemons and my god the taste! It was really tangy and had the perfect amount of lemony taste without it being too sour.
You can buy these drinks in Waitrose and they’re definitely worth trying, especially as they’re far more ethical.
