There’s no hiding the fact that I am a massive fan of the theater from musicals such as School of Rock (must see when it comes out in the UK) and Jersey Boys to plays such as War Horse and Curious Incident of the Dog at Nighttime. Wicked is something I saw quite a number of years ago and have been meaning to go back and see again (it will happen soon), but what got me pretty excited was the announcement that Wicked would be turned into a movie, and rightfully so. If you can’t wait to see the movie then the show is playing at London’s Apolo Victoria Theatre and you can grab tickets here.
Wicked is based on a novel by Gregory Maguire and focus’ on the untold stories of the two witches from The Wizard of Oz. The Wicked Witch of the West and her unlikely friend, Glinda the Good. The whole premise follows around green-skinned and exiled Elphaba through her life and events which eventually label her as being ‘wicked’ and the friendship between the two witches is great to see. It really shows that there are two sides to every story, and come on most of us have heard the incredible ‘Defying Gravity’.
The film isn’t set to come out until around 2019 and there’s little which has been announced about it which got me thinking who I think would be great within the movie. The lead character of Elphaba needs to be someone who is witty and although ‘wicked’ ultimately a good person. The first person who came to mind to me was Anna Kendrick as she is hands down one of the wittiest actresses out there and I think she’s incredible, plus she was an amazing voice (Pitch Perfect is a great example). I did a little Googling and it seems the world might be behind this as Anna tweeted about going filming in Atlanta for an ‘undisclosed film’ putting ‘No rest for the wicked’ in her tweet. Now this could just be fans reading into it but I’d be really excited if she was involved in the project.
Now you can’t have a gifted singer as Elphaba and not have Glinda in the same range which is why I think Amanda Seyfriend would be perfect. She’s sang for parts in Mamma Mia and Les Misérables so we know she can do it, plus she has the long blonde hair and innocent sweet face which would be perfect for the good witch.
Madame Morrible is the headmistress of the school which both Glenda and Elphaba go to and who else could have the same stern face but also sing than Meryl Streep? She got an Oscar nomination for Into the Woods (staring alongside Kendrick) and she did star with Seyfriend in Mamma Mia so it would make perfect sense.
To be honest though if Ana gets the part as Elphaba I don’t really care who else is in the movie as she’s hands down one of my favourite people.
