I’ve been wanting to do an escape room style thing for ages, especially as Crystal Maze is obviously the best and needs to come back properly. So when the team at Handmade Mysteries offered for me and some friends to come along and give their ‘Lady Chastity’s Revenge’* room ago I jumped at the chance.
Handmade Mysteries offer their games in two pubs across London, one in East London which is in Hackney and one in West London which we went to in Clapham. There’s also a location in Brighton if you’re more on the south coast. Firstly the Four Thieves Pub in Clapham where it is located is incredible, not only had they totally nailed their Halloween Decore (it was too dark to take photos sadly) but upstairs there is a games room with mini golf, arcade games, remote controlled cars, everything and it was so cool. I’ll definitely be going back again to take advantage of the other fun you can have there.
Now I don’t want to give too much away but with Lady Chastity’s Revenge the premise isn’t to solve clues to escape the room per say it’s to unlock something which could be your prize should you succeed. Gabriel is a character within the story and we had a lovely lady take on the role and she was amazing. I’ve read so many other reviews about the actors/ actresses which take on this part and all have said exactly how I feel. She stayed in character and gave the night a very spooky feel. Guiding us to a room off from the main pub we are given a slight backstory to the ‘game’ and told we have three chances for help from her and then the hour starts.
Now an hour might sound like a long but when it’s dark, smoky, you’re worried about things jumping out and trying to get your brain to work it goes very quickly. I won’t talk about the puzzles and clues etc but what I will say is everything is perfectly put together and absolutely everything has been thought about. The clues are so cryptic and clever you do need a bit of out-of-the-box thinking which might be why we weren’t that great as we thought a bit too laterally. You’ll find out a lot about you and your friends doing something like this, for example, who has the most active brain and who is the most fearless. I really wish we had been able to stay on in the room just to see if we could have solved the final clue but alas we will never know how it ends.
We might not have finished the task within the allocated hour, although we did get down to the final clue but we had so much fun taking part, giggling and screaming throughout. I haven’t done any other rooms like this to compare but I can’t imagine how anything else can pinpoint so many details with their clues. A room like this is such a great way to spend an evening or weekend and a great team building/ bonding experience. If you fancy trying out one of their rooms for free you can enter a competition right here or book the event right here, I promise you you’ll have so much fun.
Have you ever tried an escape room?
