I have been on a bit of a DIY quest this past year or so in my flat buying loads of furniture, putting things up on my walls and trying to make my not so little two bedroom flat into exactly the kind of place that I want it to be. Despite all the work I’ve done little to none of the actual DIY myself, that’s where my dad’s come in, it’s one of their many amazing uses isn’t it?! Plus it usually means after he’s helped me out I take him out for a Nando’s meal, it’s tradition and works for us! Slater and Gordon recently did a survey which found that 23% of Brit’s were planning on taking on tasks in 2017 definitely me included. One of the biggest reasons that I don’t like doing basic DIY, mainly putting up photos and drilling into the walls is because due to being in a new build there are a lot of pipes and wires beneath all my walls and the last thing I want to do is hammer in the wrong place so my dad does it with his tool to detect what’s underneath. Although surprisingly Slater and Gordon found that 45% of people said they’d drill into walls. Count me out!
Over the years’ I’ve taken on a few larger tasks within my flat mainly a massive tiling project in my kitchen and new carpets across both bedrooms and I have to admit I love my flat, although I don’t think I’ll ever be fully satisfied. In the next few weeks me and my dad (him mainly) are going to be making some custom shelves for my flat (three different versions for three different rooms) as I just didn’t like what I saw in shops. Knowing my mind what I wanted this is going to be a task full of painting, cutting down wood, spraying brackets and the fun part of dressing them.
Home furnishings is one of those simple things which I can do myself and anyone who knows me knows how much of a cushion obsessive I am. I used to have about seven sitting on my bed alone but I had to move a few to the living room as they were just getting in the way. Both of the sofa’s in my living room and the sofa bed in my spare room are covered. So of course when Funky Cushions offered to send me some awesome new cushion covers* I said yes! Their website offers a whole range of cushions and in the end, I opted for the Work Hard Dream Big cover as I lack any light colours in my cushions so the white background is perfect. Then I opted for a black floral quote cover just because it looked super pretty and I knew it would match in well in my living room.
I’m always swapping around cushions and covers so I didn’t need to go out and buy cushion inserts (although you can get them super cheap on eBay!) and I have to admit the cushions look awesome sat on my sofa nestled in with my other beauties. Considering the cushions only work out at £5 each I wasn’t expecting that much but they’re such good quality and don’t feel like cheap cotton which is going to rip easily, an issue I’ve had with cushions in the past.
Do you have any 2017 DIY plans?
