DIY Projects and Styling My Flat

Posted in Lifestyle

I have been on a bit of a DIY quest this past year or so in my flat buying loads of furniture, putting things up on my walls and trying to make my not so little two bedroom flat into exactly the kind of place that I want it to be. Despite all the work I’ve done little to none of the actual DIY myself, that’s where my dad’s come in, it’s one of their many amazing uses isn’t it?! Plus it usually means after he’s helped me out I take him out for a Nando’s meal, it’s tradition and works for us! Slater and Gordon recently did a survey which found that 23% of Brit’s were planning on taking on tasks in 2017 definitely me included. One of the biggest reasons that I don’t like doing basic DIY, mainly putting up photos and drilling into the walls is because due to being in a new build there are a lot of pipes and wires beneath all my walls and the last thing I want to do is hammer in the wrong place so my dad does it with his tool to detect what’s underneath. Although surprisingly Slater and Gordon found that 45% of people said they’d drill into walls. Count me out!

Over the years’ I’ve taken on a few larger tasks within my flat mainly a massive tiling project in my kitchen and new carpets across both bedrooms and I have to admit I love my flat, although I don’t think I’ll ever be fully satisfied. In the next few weeks me and my dad (him mainly) are going to be making some custom shelves for my flat (three different versions for three different rooms) as I just didn’t like what I saw in shops. Knowing my mind what I wanted this is going to be a task full of painting, cutting down wood, spraying brackets and the fun part of dressing them.

Cushions

Home furnishings is one of those simple things which I can do myself and anyone who knows me knows how much of a cushion obsessive I am. I used to have about seven sitting on my bed alone but I had to move a few to the living room as they were just getting in the way. Both of the sofa’s in my living room and the sofa bed in my spare room are covered. So of course when Funky Cushions offered to send me some awesome new cushion covers* I said yes! Their website offers a whole range of cushions and in the end, I opted for the Work Hard Dream Big cover as I lack any light colours in my cushions so the white background is perfect. Then I opted for a black floral quote cover just because it looked super pretty and I knew it would match in well in my living room.

I’m always swapping around cushions and covers so I didn’t need to go out and buy cushion inserts (although you can get them super cheap on eBay!) and I have to admit the cushions look awesome sat on my sofa nestled in with my other beauties. Considering the cushions only work out at £5 each I wasn’t expecting that much but they’re such good quality and don’t feel like cheap cotton which is going to rip easily, an issue I’ve had with cushions in the past.

Do you have any 2017 DIY plans?

My next diy job is getting rid of the laminate flooring i have in some rooms. i hate laminate and wood flooring as it just feels horrible and has a cold feel to it. Be getting carpet put in x

  • We have 2 absolutely massive DIY jobs that we have been putting off for 2 years to complete lol. One is an attic conversion the other to deck and astro turf the garden, will they be done this year mmmm who knows. BTW i love the cushions, very me 🙂 x

  • It’s so nice to have a man with tools to do the drilling into walls part of DIY, I wouldn’t want to do that part myself either! I think it”s a great trade-off taking him out for a Nando’s meal after. I really love your new cushions, especially the one with the Shakespeare quote. That is such a great quote x

  • I don’t have any DIY plans, my biggest plan this year is to get on the property ladder and then I’ll probably be doing a load of DIY! x

I was just thinking the other day that I need to buy some cushions. Swapping the covers is also a great idea to change the feel of a room quickly.

The list of DIY jobs grows ever longer, last week’s storms took a slate of our roof so there is another job added to the list. I love your cushion covers, especially the one with the Shakespeare quote, Cushions always add that special finishing touch to a room.

It’s always nice to do some diy projects around the house to put your own spin on things. It’s really satisfying too.

  • We are decorating our daughters room I’m re-vamping her drawers and making some bunting, My mum is making her a pompom rug.

I’m obsessed with cushions too, I have so many scattered around. My Dad always helps with my DIY too as my Husband is useless 🙂

I love cushions, I may have a slight obsession… Although I haven’t heard of funky cushions so I will certainly check those out! Such a lovely way to add unique touches to your flat. I love all the qutes but especially the ‘work hard dream big’ one. They’re all so pretty! xx

I love your choice of cushion covers they look great. No plans for any DIY at the moment but this could always change.

  • Natasha Mairs

I am really loving those cushions! Can’t decide which one I like the most

  • I do like the cushions but I wouldn’t be brave enough to have cushions with words on in my lounge. Maybe on the bed instead.

  • Beautyqueenuk

I love the cushions I like the ones which can be a little bit quirky and kooky x

  • I love the cushions you chose, I really need some new cushions for living room – along with curtains and blinds too

  • I love these cushion covers. We have a new Costa coffee near us and they have some really funky cushions sadly they have costa logos on them or i’m sure people would be tempted to take them.

I don’t have any DIY plans as of yet this year as my schedule is jam packed unfortunately but I will be buying a house so who knows, that may change! xxx

I’m planning to recycle and made a DIY pillow using the empty sachets and I will cut it in a small pieces and have a pillow case.

  • I am planning to redecorate some rooms in our house. Can’t wait to get started.

  • I’m a huge cushion fan too – I always say you can never have too many of them – these especially are right up my street!

  • fashion-mommy

I love those cushions, they are just gorgeous and so reasonably priced too.

  • I love the work hard, dream big cushion! So chic!

  • I love the idea of doing up a rented property and making it your own, but alas, my flat is beyond that. The landlord insists on a garish red colour theme, which would sound like but I mean it when I say EVERYTHING is red. I’ve never heard of Funky Cushions, will have to check them out.

  • ah these cushions are amazing. and agree with post, diy can be danegrous if you dont know whats hidden in your walls!thats why I am an interior designer 😉

  • Amazing! I’m so bad when it come to DIY. I always think it’s a great idea and sometimes even buy all the supplies, but I literally never get around do actually doing it. My sister does DIY everything. I think some people are just better at it than others! You seem to be great at it!
