Over the past few years’, there has been a surge in food-based delivery services promising to send you ingredients for all the dinners’ you need but it’s not something which I ever really looked into but recently the team at Gousto* got in touch to see if I’d like to try out their service. I’m not one to turn down free food so seconds after firing back the email I was browsing on the website to see what recipes I could pick.
The concept of Gousto works that each week you can choose from 22 delicious yet healthy recipes and once you pick them they’re delivered to you fresh on your chosen delivery day (including Sundays). You’re sent all of the ingredients you need along with recipe cards and then it’s down to you to cook, serve and enjoy. Unlike a lot of subscription services you can alter how often you want the deliveries, every week/ every other week/ once a month, and you can pause and skip deliveries so easily if you know you’re going to be away.
After searching online I opted for the Chicken Cacciatore with crispy potatoes and the Posh open burger with rosemary chips because I’m a creature of habit and chicken and burgers seemed like a nice easy option to go for. You can choose your recipes to be for 2 or 4 people depending on your household so I chose the two meaning it was two tasty meals me and my other half could have together.
Making the order was so easy and I was pleasantly surprised that they offered Sunday deliveries which is so handy being the day I’m least likely to go out. On the morning of my delivery, I was sent a text giving me the one-hour time slot that it would be delivered. I did have a slight blip with the delivery and that’s because you leave an option for an alternative place to put the item if you’re not in so I put a neighbour down but on the box, it just showed that as delivery instructions so the item went to my neighbours without them even trying me. A few hours later when we realized what had happened and our neighbours came home we had the box of goodies.
When I opted the box I was so impressed at the attention to detail, every single item was individually wrapped from a little pot of tomato paste to garlic cloves and the right amount of herbs. The only you need to provide is things like salt, pepper, and oil. We even had a good quality branded wooden spoon included inside. As we had no dinner plans we made the Chicken Cacciatore which is basically chicken in a tomato based sauce with carrots, onions, garlic and herbs. I’m no Nigella but I have to admit thanks to the amazing details of the cards the meal came out incredible. I don’t know whether it was the fresh ingredients, the attention to detail or just the chef inspired recipes but it was one of the best things we’ve ever cooked.
I have to hand it to Gousto; the portion sizes were perfect, the meal planning card was so specific and easy to follow and the food came out incredibly. At the point of writing this I haven’t tried the open burger but I am so excited to give it a whirl.
