I used to be one of those people who had so much rubbish on their desk; piles of paperwork, receipts, my printer and everything else which didn’t have a home but I’ve found since using my desk to actually work from as opposed to purely storage my desk has become far more functional. My printer has been banished to the living room – thank god it’s wireless – my papers have gone into a drawer and everything else which doesn’t have a home is piled into a box ready to sort through one day.
As I’m not a full-time freelancer there are not hundreds of things that I need access to on my desk so it’s more a peaceful aesthetic that I go for, although just a few inches above the wall on my desk there are hundreds of photos/ quote cards/ postcards and everything else so it’s not all peaceful. I used to always work on my lap in the living room while watching whatever TV show I was binging at the time but now I try to make a conscious effort to actually use the desk in my spare room because that’s what it’s there for.
I’ve gone through quite a lot of workspaces over the years, but my latest office desk comes from Kit Out My Office which is super roomy underneath and has two small drawers for me to keep essentials close by.
On the left-hand side of my desk I have my little trinket corner which sits on top of The Luxe Life book by Fleur De Force, something which shamefully I’ve still not gotten around to reading – maybe because it’s hidden underneath my trinkets. I have a small pink flower in a pot because I love having some colour there but there’s no chance I’d always be able to fresh flowers on display. Next, to that, there’s a diptique candle which smells nice enough even when it’s not lit. During the winter time I love having candles on although with the warmer weather I have been tempted to swap this out for some reeds for my scent boost.
On the far left are my two favourite Pop Vinyl characters which are Jack and Sally from The Nightmare Before Christmas. These are the only two of my characters which are unboxed although I do also own boxed versions of them because I am that much of an obsessive.
On the left-hand side of my desk I always keep an open notebook so I can write down any notes which may pop into my head while I’m working, it might be a few prop’s I need to add to an image, it could be an idea for a blog post or just something I need to remember to do. My bullet journal sometimes lives here if I am actively using it to mark things off or to do my monthly stat reports etc. I could not be without my bullet journal as it holds so much of my life inside.
My mobile phone always lays somewhere on my desk as I am pretty much attached to it 24/7, I use it to reply to messages, schedule things, make notes and various other things.
In the middle of my desk is one of my motivational images which says ‘Create Your Own Story’ I love changing these about especially when my latest Treat Box comes through with pretty postcards. In front of that I have a small bucket list box which I bought from an exhibition in Amsterdam and I love writing little things down, usually of places I want to visit and popping them away for when I need an idea of something to do.
My Olympus Pen pretty much always sits on my desk as although it’s not my regular blogging camera (for that I use my Canon 6D) I like having it here in case I want to try something out or just pop in my bag for a day out. I find I am much more likely to take my camera out if I can see it there.
Next up is something practical which is my pen pot from Typo, I love this pen pot as it says ‘Good Vibes Only’ on the side which looks really cute. I keep a mixture of pens, pencils, highlighters, and scissors in here which are the general things I need on hand. Next to that is another trinket corner perched on my favourite marble tray which includes two fake potted plants, and some little bits I’ve bought from holidays away.
My laptop is usually perched on the corner but my Macbook generally comes everywhere with me. Currently, I have a marble affect skin on it which is covered in stickers from Red Bubble, something I’m sure to change around loads.
What are your must have desk essentials?
