My Balcony Transformation – Making The Most Of Small Spaces

balcony

Regular readers of my blog will know a little about my balcony transformation as it was buying the fake grass which impacted my spending ban last month. Being a flat owner was always going to be a pain as it meant a lack of garden space. Although I’m not bothered about having a massive garden, a nice decking area for barbeques and some space for impending cats to run riot would be lovely. I am very blessed to have a small balcony to call my spot of outdoor living and lucky that it’s not completely open plan.

My balcony runs straight off my main open plan kitchen/ living and dining room which means it’s visible when I sit on the sofa and an easy space to spend time in while still being able to hear the music in the living room etc. For the most part it’s completely closed in with windows all around but the windows can slide completely open in the nicer weather to bring a breeze in when it’s stuffy, or heat up the area when there’s a lot of sun. It doesn’t look like a huge area but with some planning, I’ve been able to make the most out of the area.

balcony before

As you can see from the before balcony transformation photo it wasn’t styled, the small table and chairs which had barely been sat at was just positioned in there alongside some rubbish bits which ended up just living out there as I couldn’t be bothered to do anything with them. The first thing I did was pull everything out and clean it all as there was a lot of dust around the window frames and on the wooden flooring.

Next up was installing this amazing fake grass on the floor. I can’t even explain how much it has changed the look of the balcony and it feels so much more homely, plus it’s super soft so it’s really comfortable to walk around without shoes on, something I hated doing before. I could have got fake grass much cheaper but because I wanted something super soft I ended up spending about £100 on this. Next up was the other larger splurge which was this rattan sofa from B&Q which I am so in love with. It’s really comfortable and it makes the area feel like a proper living area as you really want to sit in these seats. I have a beautiful mandala style round cloth over the top which adds such a nice splash of colour to the area.

I have kept the original table and chairs as they’re useful to have, but thankfully they fold down and I have a small area where the windows open where I can store them. I do need a table which is far lower to be used for drinks and things at the side of the sofa.

Next up was the decoration side which was always going to be my favourite and we have three main things; Norman the Gnome which came from Next, now I am not normally a gnome person but the fact that he has a stone look finish and rocks a pair of sunglasses and a guitar I felt he was so me. Attached to the wall behind the sofa is this gold hammered metal moon cycle banner which adds something to a very plain space. And finally, I have this fake red leafed plant from Homesense which adds a proper feeling of outdoors to the area. I’d love to have more plants but I know I’m not very good at keeping them alive, although I would like to get some hanging clear planters so I can put some succulents in them as I know they don’t require much water.

So there you go that’s my balcony transformation. I am so happy with the end results and I know it’s going to be an area which I’ll use so much more now.

I’m loving this innovative way in which you have made the most of your small space. Loving the grass as it gives the space a warmer feel to it and as you say very cosy on the feet.

I love how you transformed that balcony. That table – while probably useful – was taking a lot of space with those chairs. And while I’m not a big fan of that artificial grass, it does look rather nice paired with the sofa and a plant!

I love the idea of using fake grass. If I didn’t have enough of it to mow right now, I would totally do that! Thanks for sharing.
