When you have your own property the desire to go all out with home improvements and DIY is hard to miss and since moving into my flat I’ve felt that way. Admittedly it’s my dad or my boyfriend who goes ahead with all the DIY and things but the thoughts come from my mind. With just a few rooms (and no garden) there’s only so much I can do but I’ve been lucky enough to have my kitchen tiled and to get new carpets within the 3 and a half years I’ve been there. There’s also a limit being both in a block of flats, but also being in a shared ownership property that limits how much I can do, this is something I can’t wait to do in a house, like major changes like walls and windows.
Here are a few home improvements I’d love to have done.
Add some shelving in my spare room
I already have plenty of storage and a shelf for my Pop Vinyl collection (although it is full and pretty out of hand), but when my boyfriend officially moves in very soon I am going to need more shelving space to display some of his things and make it more ‘ours’ than ‘mine’. We’ve talked about potentially a shelf which goes all around the top of the walls leaving a gap to display things but it’s still in the early stages now.
Painting my main living space
As a new build when I moved in all of the walls were white and over time I added a statement wall of paper into both of the bedrooms but nothing was done in my main room which is an open plan kitchen/ living area. I have loads of things up on my walls but I think I need a splash of colour on one of the walls, perhaps the small one behind my TV as I think it will make the place feel a bit more homely. Dulux paint is always the first place I turn to because of the sheer amount of colours they have but did you know that the colour you pick affects everything including your how you act, choices you may make and even your mood. The team at Thomas Sanderson have created a Psychology of Colour guide to help you understand more about the colours you have chosen. Thankfully for me they suggested red in the kitchen which I have, this is down to red quickening your heart wait which sensitizes the taste buds and sense of smell. Who would have known?!
Create more internal storage in my cupboards
I have massive cupboards as you walk into my flat which houses my washing machine, boiler and then a whole load of crap such as suitcases, my hoover etc. Now I know there’s definitely a better way of storing everything and maximizing how much space I have in the cupboard so I want to come up with some of storage plan/ shelving etc to ensure I am making the most out of the space and can fix as much in it as possible.
Replace the laminate flooring
I have laminate flooring in the hallway and all through the main living room/ kitchen but I’d love to replace it with something new such as Herringbone Flooring which is just a bit nicer looking. Currently the pattern of my flooring all go in one direction and it looks pretty boring but Herringbone is done at angles in a zig-zag pattern so it’s so much nicer to look at.
