As most of you know I’m in the process of selling my flat which means moving is imminent and the idea of not knowing exactly when this will happen is quite a daunting one. We sold the flat in late November and ever since then I’ve been thinking about the idea of packing, de-cluttering and clearing out but I didn’t want to do anything before Christmas as I wanted to enjoy our final Christmas. Ever since January 1st it’s been all systems go as I’m clearing out every inch of the flat to ensure that I’m getting rid of everything that I won’t be taking with me or storing. I’m not physically throwing much out and things are being stored to take to car boot sales, being sold online or given away to friends/ family but I wanted to start this process as early as possible.
As we’re going to have plenty of fee’s and solicitors bills to settle up when we move I’m trying to make as much money as possible selling items before moving, but you can apply for a payday loan so we have this as a backup if we don’t quite have all the money set aside beforehand.
As I started sorting things out quite early – this is the organised planner in me – it has meant that the flat has been pretty crazy over the last few months. I know there’s some furniture we’re not going to take with us so I want to sell it and make some extra savings money which is one of the reasons why I wanted to start packing early. Also, I had no idea how big a storage unit we’re going to need and I only knew this when we start clearing out/ packing what we have. The chaos and mess have caused me to feel a bit anxious but here are some of the things I’m doing to stay organised.
Our bedroom was one of the first places I started to clear out as I wanted to combine the contents of some units and work out what storage space we have as most of the furniture in there (other than the bed and wardrobe) are coming to my parent’s with us. I’ve been using the bedroom more and more lately as a space to relax and unwind in the evening as our living room is quite chaotic and Luke’s been playing Fallout in there a lot. Because of this, I’ve been making sure whatever I clear out/ move goes outside of the bedroom to keep it calm. Having some space which isn’t full of mess or boxes is just what I need so I can close the door and forget the mess outside.
When we move to my parents we will be taking some stuff with us food wise like some cupboard staples and things we’ve just bought and are in the middle of eating but I don’t want to be carting over boxes upon boxes of food. I hate the idea of throwing stuff out as well and I’m going, to be honest, there’s probably stuff I’ve had in the cupboards since I moved in *eek* so something we’re doing is eating through this stuff. We did a massive clear out of all these areas to throw away the out of date stuff and then I’ve been planning meals around what we have. This means not only are we finishing this food but I’m only having to buy the fresh bits to go with them so we’re saving money too.
As there are a lot of different areas in the flat to clear and sort out I’ve created a plan which tackles certain areas on each day, but I’ve tried to home in on specific areas. Rather than putting ‘clear out bedroom’, I’ll break it down to ‘clear out chest of drawers’, ‘clear out beauty and skincare items’, ‘clear out under the bed’ etc, by having smaller areas it means I’ll be more thorough and it makes it a realistic goal. When I do clear out areas although I know I need to do it quite often I try not to be doing it every single night after work, or have too much on at the weekend as I still want time for me or time to do other things.

I remember this well. We sold our flat and moved into our parents for 2 months whilst we were waiting for our house to complete. It actually felt really good to have time to declutter and get rid of stuff. I can’t believe how quickly our house has become full though after having only enough stuff to fill a one bed flat at one time! Good luck with the move,
Sounds like you have a good plan in place to be prepared for the move. How exciting to be moving – wishing you the best! You’ll have to let us know how it goes.
It sounds like you are being really organised when I move I always end up in utter chaos! I also go a bit crazy with throwing things away and end up getting rid of things I should have really kept.
moving is chaos and catastrophe indeed. there is nothing I personally hate more. And my house in considered de-cluttered because I like in minimal (minus my and husband’s closet – be both are into fashion so we have a number of clothes). Food is always an issue and a matter of long term planning. I would definitely still have rice and dried beans because I buy it in bulk and than eat it throughout a year. My best wishes to you to do it all properly. You can make it!
Sounds like you are well organised for your move. All the best for when moving day arrives, I find moving so stressful but worth it in the end!
Well done on keeping so organised, I’d struggle I think. It is a great idea to use up the stuff in your freezer.
I think I am weird because I like moving. I get to re organize rooms I never had time for and get to ensure there is no dust! You provided awesome info to keep people sane throughout the process!
Now and again, usually when I’m broke I try and eat through the freezer and cupboards. You will be surprised at how much food you have!. Good luck with the flat sale
That so nice to know about this. I love the way you keep organized and I enjoying reading your blog.
Thanks for the tips. My room is either super clean or full of clutter. After reading Marie Kondo’s book, I finally learned to let go of unnecessary stuff.
Some great tips thank you, I remember too well living out of boxes when we were in the process of moving. I actually get excited about clearing out my fridge, cupboards and eating all the food haha!

Congrats on everything you have done to keep being so. I’m the same, I like to use up everything first in the freezer. Great ideas and suggestions.
I hate moving, as everything feels like it’s a mess, it’s impossible to find anything you need! But I do like the buying new stuff side of it and that are always options when you need them 🙂
Oh gosh, moving and packing can be so stressful can’t it! I hope it all goes well, it sounds like you’re well organised.
