Whenever you decide to visit a new city, the same type of question will often arise:

What part of the city should I stay in?

What are some of the best places to eat?

Where is the best shopping?

What are the local sights I simply have to see?

What is the best way to get around the city?

If you have chosen Liverpool as your next destination, let’s explore what the best way to get around town is, in order to help you make the most of your stay, and focus on making new memories instead of finding your way around.

Choosing an itinerary

We all have our own specific and personal preferences when travelling, and when you arrive in the glorious city of Liverpool, there are numerous things you will find yourself drawn towards.

If you are in the city to have a good time and explore some of the nightlife, there are plenty of bars and clubs that host live music, and no matter how eclectic your taste is, there is certainly a place in Liverpool to cater to your preferences (even if you are not a Beatles fan).

You might be in town for some cultural exploration, and wish to visit the Tate, Liverpool Cathedral, the World Museum or the Merseyside Maritime Museum.

If you are looking to do some damage to your bank account, Liverpool is also teaming with shopping destinations, from large shopping centres to farmers markets and quaint boutique stores.

And of course, you might be in town to watch the Merseyside derby, in which case you will want to stop by both Anfield and Goodison Park, kit yourself out in your team’s latest gear, and get your pipes warmed up for singing You’ll Never Walk Alone or It’s a Grand Old Team.

Getting around Liverpool

If you are anything like me, you would ideally like to explore the entire city on foot, as that is without a doubt the best way to get to know a city. You get to feel the atmosphere of the place, mix with the locals, and stumble across places you would not know of otherwise.

However, walking around has its distinct disadvantages: there is only so much walking you can do in a given day, and with all the stops and sights, you can’t expect yourself to achieve everything on your must-see list on foot.

Luckily, Liverpool has two amazing bus routes that help circumvent this issue.

City Explorer has 14 stops and they just happen to be the best spots in the city centre.

There is also LFC City Explorer, made for football fans from across the world, which runs from the centre, by Shankly Museum, all the way to Anfield Stadium.

The best feature about both buses are the tour guides, who are there to provide plenty of knowledge and humour, helping you get to know the city and its history and sights a little bit better. Much better than if you were to try and gather all the facts yourself.

Both buses offer 24-hour hop on hop off tickets, which means you can jump off anywhere you like, and simply catch the next bus after you are done exploring a certain location. Much more convenient than trying to get everywhere on foot.

Before you head to Liverpool, try to compile a list of places you simply have to see in person: but don’t forget to also give yourself the freedom to wander off the path you have planned out, and really get to know the city and its people. I guarantee you will not regret it for one moment.
