*This is a collaborative post but all blogging tips and tricks are my own
When I first started blogging just over six years ago I had no expectations or thoughts behind what I was doing. I don’t think I even predicted I’d continue with it. At the time I was doing a lot of freelance copywriting and music journalism, so creating content to other people’s guidelines. I wanted a space on the internet to talk about what I wanted, however, I wanted. So I got a blogger account and started writing. Over the years. I’ve had my ups and downs but have never felt like I wanted to give up. Although I’ve got plenty if blogging tips and tricks that I’ve learnt over the years.
One of the most important things to remember is not to compare yourself to others. There is absolutely no one who will be on the same journey as you and by comparing you may be comparing your chapter two to someone else’s chapter ten. It doesn’t matter what bloggers have spotlights on them don’t compare. Even if you think you’ve found a blogger who started when you did, in the same niche as you you’re still going to have differences.
When I first started blogging I’d constantly look at bloggers and think why are they getting all the paid ad’s, or why were they working with all the brands I wanted to. But this isn’t the right attitude to have. Concentrate on your own journey and pick up your own blogging tips and tricks.
Before you buy a domain name your URL will be something like .blogspot or .wordpress. When your URL is like this you don’t build up your own domain authority meaning you’ll struggle with some partnerships. A lot of brands will want to work with bloggers who have their own domain so look into this early on. In most cases it will only cost about £10 a year for a domain. But choose your name wisely and think about how it may sound or look in a few years time. For example if you’re a parenting influencer and you go for meandbabymakestwo but then you have a second child it won’t look right. Or if you’re a lifestyle influencer and you choose a name with a pop culture reference will it make sense in five years time.
One of the biggest blogging tips and tricks I can suggest is keeping a track of all of your blog spending. As soon as you earn your first penny from blogging you’ll need to register as self-employed and file an assessment. If you earn over a certain amount across your income streams you will need to pay taxes on your earnings. But you’ll be able to claim for expenses so it’s best to keep track as you go along. For example this may be hosting fee’s or subscriptions for social media scheduling. Or it could be travel to an event you’re covering.
It might take a while before brands or agencies reach out to you. But remember don’t accept everything you’re offered. It may feel really exciting when you get that first email but think about what you blog about and what your audience would enjoy. If you’re a beauty blogger your audience probably wouldn’t care about you reviewing a kids toy. And the same with paid posts, if you’re offered money for a sponsored post think about the value to your audience. If you start accepting everything your audience won’t trust you and your blog will become diluted.

This is great advice. I am terrible for comparing myself to others and I know I shouldn’t.
My top advice is the domain for sure! I wasted 2 years on a WordPress account and I regret it even now x
Thankfully the year or so when I didn’t have a domain I wasn’t blogging properly, but it sucks when you work so hard but then get a domain and have to start again x
These are some great tips – I think a lot of people don’t realise still that blogging money is an income and needs registering with HMRC.
Really great tips! It can be so hard not to compare ourselves to others but we all do it anyway don’t we? I definitely agree with keeping track of stuff and not saying yes to every opportunity too!
Yep we do all do it, I know even know sometimes I do and I have to remind myself not to x
Great tips i think the hardest thing is not comparing yourself to others, and remembering you are unique to your blog. Also not accepting everything
It’s really hard not to compare yourself with others. I think many do this especially in the blogging world.
Some great tips here, especially about not accepting every item or payment you’re offered. I agree as I do say no all the time if I feel a certain product does not fit my blog.
Me too, you don’t want to seem inauthentic because it doesn’t help in the long run x
These are such great tips, thanks for sharing! I am the worst at comparing myself to others and always putting myself down but I am slowly learning to stop and just be proud of my own content etc! I definitely agree with keeping track of everything too! I just use a simple excel spreadsheet but it makes everything so much easier come tax return time. x
I just use google sheets so I can access them anywhere, but it’s enough to stay organised x
I wish I was better at keeping on top of my finances even after all these years of blogging!
These are great tips, I definitely wish I’d thought about my blog name and URL at the start of my blogging journey.
Good tips, it is far too easy to lulled into bad habits when you are a new blogger but you mustbe unique and know your own worth form very early on. Mich x
I kinda stumbled my way into blogging, but I know these tips are going to be very useful for newbie bloggers!
I kind of did as well, I didn’t have any clue what I was doing at the start haha x
