From the ceiling to the floor, your kid’s room should be a fun, creative space that allows your child to use his or her imagination freely. While neutral, dark colors may be fitting for an adult bedroom or other rooms in the house, children are often drawn to bright hues and bold patterns. As you design the perfect room for your child, there are several unique ways you can take a basic, plain space and turn it into a kid wonderland.
An all-white room is never a good idea for a child’s room. Not only does having no color on the walls breed boredom, random spots, and knicks on the wall from the rough, messy play are more likely to show. Colorful wallpaper with fun patterns brings life to space and adds a decorative touch, even without any embellishments. If you’re concerned about the colors and patterns clashing with other bold designs in the room, consider a light blue wallpaper to add some color without going overboard.
If your child has hardwood floors in his or her room, adding an area rug provides a soft area for your little one to play and helps incorporate a different texture into the room. Rugs also come in countless designs and can fit in with essentially any theme. If you want to seriously brighten up the room, add a multi-colored rug that brings all the colors from the design together. A pompom rug, whether purchased or homemade, is fun to touch and look at.
Whether your child is obsessed with princesses, space, dinosaurs, or the ocean, hanging wall art can bring the room together and allow you to add a personal touch to the room. Finding a way to incorporate pictures of friends, family, and pets can also add life to the kids wallpaper you choose and bring comfort and joy to your child. Whatever pictures you hang up, choose a bright frame to make the art stand out.
Garlands can be made from anything your creative mind can think of, from tassels and flowers to fairy lights or even small stuff toys. You can purchase a garland that matches the room’s removable wallpaper or custom make one yourself. Garlands can be strung above a bed, doorway, or close to a mirror for a whimsical effect.
Whether you use a lamp, ceiling fan, or lanterns, lights help brighten up a room any time of day. Many fixtures can be purchased in a variety of colors. Younger kids may enjoy a colorful star-light feature that can also serve as a nightlight at bedtime. A bold chandelier may better suit the taste of older children.
As you design your kid’s room, there are many different ways you can sneak color in to make a big statement and inspire creativity. Find the perfect wallpaper and framed art to fill the walls of the room, and involve your child in selecting decorations that he or she loves.
