*This is a guest post about how to make a small kitchen feel bigger

Unless you have the room and finances for a kitchen extension, there isn’t a lot you can do with the space you’ve been given. At least, you can’t actually make it any bigger. However, there are plenty of things you can do that will make your small kitchen feel bigger, and sometimes that’s enough to improve things considerably.

The kitchen is one of the most important rooms in the house, for many people it is the most important, and having a kitchen you’re just not happy with and don’t feel comfortable in is going to make you feel badly towards the rest of the house, even if there’s nothing wrong with it. So, whatever you can do to your kitchen to improve it, will improve the rest of the house too. Read on to find out how to turn a small kitchen into one that feels much bigger. It’s not as hard as you might think.

Open Shelving

Although the idea of showing all your cupboards’ interiors to the world might not appeal initially, once you realise that open shelving will drastically increase how big your kitchen looks, you might be happy to think about it again. This is a true trick of the eye since by having open shelving you are effectively giving your kitchen an extra width of whatever size your cupboards are.

This is also a very cheap way to make your small kitchen look bigger which is another reason you might want to try it out. All you need to do is take the doors off your cupboards and it’s done. If you don’t like the look it leaves you but you do like how much bigger your kitchen feels, remove all the cupboards entirely and replace them with brand new open shelving.

Light And Bright

It’s well-known that a dark interior makes a room look smaller, and a light one makes it look bigger, so if your kitchen is designed using dark wood or wood effect, or the flooring is dark, or you have dark window frames or tiling, this could be a reason for the cramped feeling you experience when you’re in there.

Changing what you can to a lighter version using creams and whites and pine coloured wood is something that will instantly lift your kitchen and improve it. If you want to add some pops of colour you can use kitchen tiles to do it and make your kitchen not just feel larger but also more interesting too.

Clear Your Surfaces

Sometimes it really is the simplest of things that can make the biggest impact, and when it comes to making your kitchen look bigger, one of those simple things might just be reducing the amount of clutter you have on your surfaces. When you tidy this all away, the room will feel larger and it will look more pleasant too – plus it will be easier to cook in there as there will be more space.

If storage is an issue, why not utilise some space from other rooms? A display cabinet for your plates and cutlery, for example, could work well, and a larder out in the garage or shed will give you a lot more room to work in and on.
