The marketing industry is one that is growing rapidly at the moment, thanks to the rise of the Internet and the boom in online marketing channels. If you are interested in doing a marketing internship, you will undoubtedly have a lot of different options at your disposal.

This can be a little bit overwhelming and daunting. After all, the decision you make will impact your future and, therefore, it is vital that you choose the right placement. That is why we have put this post together; below you will find different areas of marketing things you need to consider when choosing an internship in the marketing industry. This should help you to make your mind up.

What type of marketing do you want to do?

The marketing industry is a diverse one, and thus there are many different directions you can go down. From developing pay monthly websites to working on massive re-branding campaigns, the options are well and truly endless.

In the broadest sense, you can choose between print and digital advertising, although both platforms can sometimes overlap. You also have to decide what area of marketing you want to get into, i.e. advertising, brand management, public relations, or market research.

Let’s take a look at each one in further detail to give you a helping hand. Although there are still more options not listed like legal marketing, lead generation marketing, and more.

Public Relations

A career in public relations is all about the management of communication with the public – be it the general public, the media, investors, employees, or consumers. You are essentially the spokesperson for a company, and thus the way you conduct yourself has a massive bearing on the way in which the company is viewed. You will often spend your time promoting new services and products via press releases or you will keep the industry abreast of the latest happenings at your company.

Market Research

As the name suggests, market research involves doing an extensive amount of research on your target market so that advertising campaigns can be better tailored and thus harvest improved results. After all, you cannot capture your market if you do not understand it. The research lays the foundations for a successful marketing campaign. You need to understand the consumer and what their purchasing habits are.

Brand Management

Brand management is becoming an increasingly popular field. This is because a business’s brand is everything in the current day and age. Everything from a company’s website to the way employees dress to their business cards is a representation of the brand, and thus brand managers focus on the bigger picture to ensure that the unique benefits of a company and its products or services are relayed effectively.

Advertising

Last but not least we have advertising. This involves working in everything from putting a strategy together to executing the strategy, and thus most would agree that this is the area of marketing with the biggest scope, as you are likely to be handling various tasks.
