All bookworms understand the true power of the page. Printed words can take us to complete new worlds, and it’s easy to get lost. If you’re a book-love looking for something to tie you to the worlds you love even when you’re away from the page, check out these jewellery inspirations based on your favourite literary characters and worlds.

Let’s get to it.

Divine Art Deco

All of those of you who have a deep and abiding love for all things Gatsby should look no further than Art Deco jewellery. Art Deco Brooches perfectly encapsulate the glitz and the glam of the Jazz Age. Typically covered in diamonds and crafted in sturdy platinum, jewellery from this time period is built to last, and antique pieces on the market today are highly sought after as a result of their excellent craftsmanship.

Daisy Buchanan definitely had a few Art Deco pieces up her sleeves, and – given the emphasis on excessive luxury and materialism in the novel – it’s a safe bet to say that Gatsby himself likely did too. Art Deco jewellery is a great gift for men or women since the most popular designs are angular, symmetrical, geometric delights that neither scream femininity nor masculinity in any great measure; gender-neutral jewellery at its finest.

Vibrant Victorian

The Dickens lovers and the Hardy lovers; you are being summoned. Absolute Bastions of the Victorian era, novelists with characters like Ebenezer Scrooge and Bathsheba Everdene will have you pining for some Victorian jewellery. Although it’s true that good quality Victorian jewellery is a tough find, it’s not impossible – and you can always opt for style over age.

Classic Victorian pieces include the cameo brooch; a stunning brooch made from solid material like hardstone, bloodstone, or some kind of shell. Carved into the surface of this sturdy material is a portrait – or cameo – of a figure, usually the bust of an Ancient Grecian-style figure. The revived interest in Ancient Greece during the Victorian era is palpable through many of their fashion and jewellery choices. Whether you’re wanting to roleplay as heroine or a dashing hero, Victorian jewellery has something for everyone. Watch chains, signet rings, chandelier earrings and more!

Delightful Dystopia

There’s no greater oxymoron than the delightful dystopia, but when it comes to jewellery an exception can be made. The Katniss Everdeen’s of the world may think that jewellery is frivolous, but even the Mockingjay pin is an accessory. If you’ve ever looked at the citizens of the Capitol with a certain envy, then maybe looking into some futuristic jewellery is for you.

Naturally, it doesn’t have to reflect dystopia; you can go for the bright, bold colours of the future. However, if you’re really going for that ‘I’m the teenage protagonist of a movement that’s going to change the world we live in’ sort of vibe, then leaning into the dystopian side of things couldn’t hurt. Angular jewellery, made with unconventional metals is the best way to feel like your very own dystopian survivor. If you’re interested in a slightly different route, you could go for something bold and symbolic; something that would fit right in somewhere like the Gilead of The Handmaid’s Tale.

Fabulous Fantasy

Who doesn’t love fantasy? Anyone with a good imagination fancies seeing themselves wandering the forests of Middle Earth or exploring the city streets of King’s Landing (pre-devastating dragon fire, naturally). If you’re a fan of a fantasy novel, boy oh boy are there the right jewellery providers for you. You can go for the right feeling with all kinds of elven-inspired, spindling jewellery, or opt for more Nordic jewellery if you’re wanting something bolder and brassier.

Alternatively, if it is specifically Middle Earth where your heart lies, Weta Workshop is the one-stop shop you need. Established to create the many weapons and armour needed to film Lord of the Rings, Weta Workshop still exists today, creating all kinds of replicas of weapons as well as jewellery. Fancy your own Nenya, a ring of the Lady of the Light, Galadriel? Maybe even your own One Ring? You know where to go.

And just like that, it’s over. Time to pick up another book and find a new world to obsess over!
