Feeling Nostalgic With Swizzels Sweets

Swizzels box of sweets

*AD- This is a collaborative post with Swizzels Shop but all thoughts and words are my own

Food and sweets always play quite a big part of my memory around points of my life. I remember holidays from amazing meals I’ve had, I remember weddings from how great (or not so great) the food was, and I can pinpoint a lot of childhood memories thanks to food. Or more accurately sweets.

Swizzels Shop have been quite a constant in my life from young childhood through to being an adult.

Going to the corner shop to buy sweets with my brother

We moved in 1998 when I was 8 and my brother was 7, and this is still the same house my parents live in now. And I distinctly remember the shop that was on the corner of the road just outside ours. It was one of those typical newsagents run by a local family and it was filled with sweets. The kind of sweets that were in open buckets and you’d just scoop a few in and repeat for everything you loved. Which for me was a lot!

There would also be those extra sweets that were pre-packaged that you’d buy thinking you’d keep them for the next day. But they’d never last. Favourites of mine were picked including Refreshers as I love the chewiness of the sweet, and still, love them to this day. And drumsticks as you think they’ll last forever, but then you get impatient and chew them all up.

Me and my brother used to come out of the shop with what felt like the biggest sweet haul. But I never remember spending more than £2-3.

Favourite Swizzels sweets

The youth club tuck shop filled with Swizzels

There used to be a youth club at the community centre next to our junior school. One Friday evening it would be for the lower school not long after school finished. Then the following Friday it would be for the slightly older kids from about 5 pm to 7 pm. And we felt so grown up then!

At the youth club, there would always be a tuck shop where you could buy your Capri Sun or those little Flintstones juices in the white square cups. And then there would be the sweets. Double Dip would always be the choice sweet for me. Something that lasted well and the sour-tasting sherbert you dipped the lolly into was the best.

Giving out Swizzels sweets to our first trick or treaters in our house

We got our first house last year but 2020 trick or treating just didn’t happen thanks to COVID. So I was super excited to get the chance to have some this year. I picked up quite a few multi-packs including a bag filled with drumsticks and love hearts hoping to be handing them out all night.

In reality, we only got about 4 trick or treaters, but it was nice to see the kids dressed up and be able to hand out sweets. It made me feel really grown up. And it did also leave us with a lot of sweets leftover which I’m not going to complain about.

Do you have any nostalgic memories that revolve around sweet treats?
