*This is a collaborative post on the benefits of eating outdoors

Eating outdoors is a real treat, chances are, we can all attest to that. But, there are some fantastic benefits too, especially if you eat outdoors as a family. Here are just five of the main benefits.

It Creates A Sense Of Joy

Something that every family wants to create is joyful memories and moments. So it makes sense that to keep your family thriving that you should encourage them to live a more joyful lifestyle, which can start with eating outdoors.

There’s a certain magic that comes from alfresco dining that even the hardest of hearts cannot deny. It makes you feel alive. The food’s tastier. And it provides space for you to allow your children or pets to run around. Long lingering outdoor meals are indeed joyful. And all it takes to seize this moment is to stay present and purposeful while you and your family are dining outdoors.

Improves Your Family’s Health

Studies show that eating outdoors improves your immunity and improve your general health and sense of wellbeing. This is mainly because outdoor dining reduces cortisol levels and increases serotonin. Too much cortisol leads to stress, weight gain, high blood pressure, heart disease and also Type 2 Diabetes. So it’s not good for you and it’s not something you’ll want for your family right?

Well, the good news is that eating outdoors while enjoying relaxed conversation and savouring your food (which always happens to taste better when you’re outside) all contribute to reduced cortisol levels, and therefore the risk of these ailments.

Furthermore, reduced cortisol and increased serotonin boost your body’s natural abilities to fight off viruses and disease. It’s a ‘no-brainer’!

Being outdoors also brings a natural sense of vitality and refreshes your mind and senses, so that you’re more alert and able to continue with your day with reduced fatigue. Sunlight triggers the release of the hormone serotonin which boosts your mood and helps an individual to feel calm and focused. Unfortunately today, we often suffer from lower levels of serotonin because we spend so much time indoors. Taking your family outdoors will guard their mental health and general wellbeing.

Encourages Your Family To Feel More Connected With Nature

Spending time outdoors will lead you and your family into wanting to spend more time outdoors.

You could eat outdoors in a local park, pack a picnic for a trip to a petting farm or even participate in an outdoor sport — tennis anyone? If tennis is not quite your thing, your family will likely love to compete against each other in a game of outdoor padel. It’s a more exhilarating version of tennis, it’s faster-paced, competitive, and easier to learn.

There are many ways that you can enjoy the outdoors and all it might take to build that relationship is for you to encourage your family to spend a little more time alfresco dining. If you’re lucky you might find outdoor gym equipment near you where you can work out as a family, whatever you decide to do, make sure to take a picnic with you.

Creates Additional Living Space

Not having enough living space is a common issue for many families, especially here in the UK, where houses are smaller in comparison to those in other countries. While that does mean less cleaning, it can be frustrating when the children are home and there’s nowhere comfortable for you to all go. That’s why, if you make your outdoor space practical and inviting — by turning it into a place where you will all enjoy cooking and eating — then you’ll naturally create a greater sense of space in your home.

There are plenty of tips available online to help ignite your inspiration for how to create a suitable outdoor dining space for your family.

Encourages Families To Enjoy Healthier Food

Eating outdoors generally leads to a more leisurely approach to eating. People tend to savour their food and eat slower, engaging all of the senses and making food that your family may otherwise turn their nose up at. Outdoor dining will encourage your family to slow down naturally and enjoy their food. It may open them up to trying new and different foods too. And of course, there’s the barbeque. Outdoor dining naturally lends itself to a touch of grilling, a healthier but oh-so-tasty approach to cooking.

There are, of course, a few weather-related issues with dining outside but there are also some easy solutions that will provide shelter, which when combined with outdoor heating could see your family sitting outside most of the year. Dining area canopies are the best solution. They provide shelter from the elements and can be in the form of shade sails, like those you see outside restaurants and hotels, or something more structured (if you have the space). Just take a look at your local school to see what type of school canopy they have, chances are, you can easily create a smaller version for your home.
