With the rising cost of living, most people are looking for ways to save money. One way to do this is by using less energy in the home. You can use less energy by making simple changes, such as turning off lights when you’re not using them and unplugging appliances when they’re not in use.

The key to managing your household energy consumption is understanding how the total expenditure on energy is calculated.

There are two types of cost to consider when it comes to appliances: the up-front cost and the running cost. The up-front cost is what you pay when you buy the appliance, while the running cost is what you pay for the energy it uses. So, to get an idea of how much an appliance costs to run, you need to know how much energy it uses and how much you pay for that energy.

You can determine how much energy an appliance uses by looking at the energy label. This will tell you how many kilowatt-hours (kWh) of energy the appliance uses per year.

Then, to calculate the running cost, you simply need to multiply the kWh by the cost of electricity per kWh.

Did you know that boilers are statistically the most expensive appliance to run in the UK? This is especially true if you’re using an older G-rated boiler opposed to an A-rated boiler.

The infographic below shows the running cost of various household appliances. By using this information, you can assess your own energy usage and make a few changes where necessary to save money.
