Until Luke got a pair of Bose Sleepbuds II I had no idea what they were, or that they even existed.
As I fall asleep first (and snore), he would then struggle to get to sleep himself. So that’s what led him to purchase a pair of the Bose Sleepbuds II and he couldn’t speak higher of them. But as someone who never really had issues falling asleep, I didn’t think they’d be worth investing in for myself.
But one night I tried Luke’s out and it changed my mind so quickly that I purchased a pair the following month.
Bose released the original Sleepbuds a while back, but they weren’t a huge success. So the brand returned to the drawing board and came up with the Bose Sleepbuds II in 2018.
The Bose Sleepbuds are unique wireless earbuds explicitly designed for sleep. Unlike standard earbuds, they’re super comfortable to wear for long periods and block outside noise whilst also playing soothing sounds to help you sleep. They’re designed to not just help you fall asleep, but stay asleep.
The Sleepbuds don’t stream music or podcasts, you can only play content from the Bose Sleep app, but thhttps://www.bose.com/en_us/products/wellness/noise_masking_sleepbuds/ere are 35+ different sounds available. You can choose from different types, from noise masking to naturescapes. Luke is a big fan of the general noise masking sounds, but I prefer sounds that feel like I’m at a spa or outside (although nothing with water!)
As well as playing sounds through the buds, you can also set a personal alarm there. I love this as it means I can set the alarm, but it won’t wake Luke up if I’m getting up before him.
As I previously mentioned, I don’t have any real issues getting to sleep, but it’s staying asleep for me.
I can be quite a light sleeper, so noises can wake me up, especially when our cats are outside the room trying to get inside. The number of times I’d be woken up at 2 am and spend ages trying to get back to sleep was too high. And sometimes, I’d even go to the loo and then struggle to fall asleep because I was too awake.
And the times I headed to bed but wasn’t all that tired, I would lay awake thinking about things for hours. But the Bose Sleepbuds II help me with both of these problems.
As soon as I set the soundscape to play, my mind focuses on that, and I rarely ever have a million whizzing thoughts. So it helps calm me and be in a better position to sleep. And because the sounds are playing, it blocks outside noise.
I’ve been using them every night for about nine weeks now, and our cats or any other noise has never waked me up. The mornings Luke has got up before me and left for work, I’ve not even stirred. So it’s been a game changer.
My main reason for buying them was to have them for our cruise to calm me in case of any choppy waters or loud porting. And I sleep like an absolute baby during our trip.
Now the Bose Sleepbuds II aren’t cheap, especially considering you can’t use them as normal earbuds. They’re around £230 full price, or you can buy refurbished ones through Bose for £100-150. The refurbished route is the one I went down, but having used them for so long, I’d pay the full price.
Despite the price, I think they’re well worth the cost. Especially if you struggle to get to sleep in the first place, you have a noisy partner, or you often wake up through the night.
I wouldn’t question spending decent money on a mattress or high-quality bedding. And the Bose Sleepbuds II fall into the same category for me. We spent so much of our time asleep that we want to make sure we’re getting the sleep we need.
Since Luke got his pair, we have bought a set for both my dad and my brother, who now can’t sleep without them.
The buds last for about 8-10 hours on a full charge, so they should last for a whole night of sleep. But if they’re not fully charged, or you have a long sleep, then they may run out before you wake up. The case can charge the buds 3-4 times when fully charged. So me and Luke keep our cases pulled in all the time, so then if we do need to go somewhere, the case has enough charge to last through.
It’s worth paying extra attention when you put them back in the case to ensure the red charging light shows. It just takes a slightly wrong angle, and they may not charge.
You do need to upload your choice of sounds onto the earbuds before you can use them. And you can’t add everything at once to try out. So listen to them briefly to see if there are any you instantly do or don’t like, then upload a selection of ones you like. Then you may find the first week or two you spend trying out the best ones for you. I alternate between three or four different ones that I love, whereas Luke sticks to the same one every time.
These do sound amazing, but they’re very expensive when compared to normal earplugs that just block out the sound. However, I sleep with a white noise machine every night because I can’t stand the sound of my husband snoring! So these could make a huge difference. It sounds like they’ve been amazing for you and Luke and it’s great that you can get them much cheaper if you buy them refurbed.
You’ve got to do what works for you. I can’t sleep with earplugs as they’re uncomfortable and I sleep through my alarms. So for me the sleepbuds are 100% worth it considering how important sleep is x
That’s really interesting. I wear ear plugs but the sleepbuds sound like they’d probably be far more helpful. I’d probably use them without the sound though.
Without the sound I don’t think you’d get more benefit from ear plugs, as it’s the sound that masks stuff more x
They are are specifically designed to fit more comfortably in your ears than traditional earbuds, and I love that they cancel noise. I think it’s worth the money.
I’ve never heard of these before but they sound like a great problem for those with sleep issues.
Wow I’ve never heard of these but this is great actually for bad sleepers (like myself). Definitely worth checking out.
Sounds like great earbuds. I need something that will last through the night as I like to listen to rain sounds. I will have to try these out.
You can have rain sounds on these. I did try rain but it just made me feel like I needed the loo haha x
Oh wow I didn’t know these exisited – I’m really intrigued as I usually find earbuds hurt my ears after 30mins or so, so it’s good to hear these can be worn longer
Laura x
Oh yeah these feel so different from earphones. Usually earphones make my ears ache, and that’s without laying down x
This is interesting. I don’t have much luck with ear buds so I’m going to look into these thanks!
I have heard so many great things about Bose and their headphones too!
That was smart to have them for calming down on a cruise. I haven’t thought of that before.
This is such a good idea! My partner always wakes up whenever there is any little noise, so this might be a great gift for him.
Yeah I used to do that, every time I heard a noise outside or our cats were active x
These sound fantastic and spike thing I think I could definitely try out as I just can’t seem to unwind once I’m in bed
