*This is a collaborative post on luxury chalet retreats
A chalet retreat ticks many boxes if you’re in the market for an overseas break this winter. You’ll have the luxury of a cosy little property surrounded by gorgeous scenery and plentiful opportunities for skiing and other winter sports.
Let’s run through a few popular Alpine destinations for holidaymakers and see what might be worth considering for each of them.
Austria provides an impressive variety when it comes to chalet breaks: you’ll have luxury accommodation, as well as more budget-friendly alternatives. The skiing in this part of the world is exceptional, though it might not match up to the competition regarding pure altitude. The vast majority of Austrian chalets are to be found in St Anton, but it’s also worth looking at Lech, Stuben, St Christoph and Obergurgl.
Austria is one of several European countries where winter tyres are mandatory during winter, even when the road conditions are favourable. So if you’re planning on doing a road trip across Europe with friends or family from the UK, it’s a good idea to equip your car with winter tyres.
The Italian alps are rich with gorgeous pine forests, and there’s even a cable car which will take you across the border to neighbouring France (which we’ll get to momentarily). As far as ski resorts are concerned, it’s difficult to beat Valle d’Aosta, which sits between Mont Blanc and the famous Matterhorn.
Naturally, Italy has world-class cuisine and wine going for it. While chalets, and in particular smaller ones, aren’t quite as plentiful in this part of the world as they are elsewhere, it’s still worth looking at what’s available.
France is probably the most accessible destination for British holidaymakers by virtue of its sheer proximity. There are plenty of resorts to choose from, with Chamonix probably the pick of the bunch as far as advanced skiers are concerned. This is where you’ll want to go if you’re concerned about altitude and spectacle. There are also restaurants positioned high up the mountains, accessible via ski lift, which is worth visiting all year round.
Switzerland offers an almost unrivalled selection of chalets, most of which offer a more traditional feel, thanks to the long history and tradition of mountain holidaying in this part of the world. The piste in Switzerland tends to be powder-rich, thanks to the high altitude of many of the resorts. Consequently, demand for chalets here tends to be extremely high. Expect to pay slightly more for a chalet here – but bear in mind that the results are often worth it.
