*This is a collaborative post on how to simplify your bathroom
The bathroom is easily one of the most overlooked spaces in any home, perhaps due to its practicality rather than its more luxurious potential as a room for pampering and relaxation. However, as somewhere we are destined to spend over a year of our lives, it may be pertinent to give some thought to your bathing spaces next time you renovate.
If your home is already given to minimalist aesthetics, you may have a clear idea of how you want your bathroom to feel – but not how to get there. What can you do to simplify your bathroom without breaking the bank?
One of the focal points of your bathroom space will, unavoidably, be your mirror. Fittings like the bath, toilet and sink take up most of the available space, but the eye is more commonly drawn to fixtures above waist height – where a great deal of visual clutter can be found.
The bathroom mirror is a practical utility and a crucial piece of décor. Big mirrors with ostentatious frames are decidedly maximalist in nature, whereas something slighter and sleeker can do a great deal more for the sense of space in your bathroom. There are also opportunities to condense, with illuminated mirrors providing both reflection and light, giving a sleek solution to two problems and eliminating the need for additional fittings.
This philosophy can, of course, be extrapolated into other aspects of your bathroom space – with varying degrees of cost attached. Your bathroom units might follow a less minimal décor convention, and their replacement could bring a much lighter, sharper feel to proceedings.
This can also be achieved by paying close attention to materials as well as furnishings outright. Sleek polished metals create more reflective surfaces for more space and light, as well as embodying simplicity through their natural colour and feel.
Just as the form of your furnishings plays a key role in the simplification of your bathroom, so too does the provision of practicality – by way of storage. Indeed, adding budget-friendly furniture in the form of shelving or standing drawers can help minimise the amount of visual clutter on your bathtub surround or sink-top. Built-in storage solutions can be even better for creating a sense of spaciousness, as storage space recedes into the walls leaving sleek surfaces and an uncluttered environment.
Simplicity is not just achieved through your approach to things, though – and a great deal can, somewhat ironically, be achieved with very little. In this instance, something as slight as a fresh colour scheme can make a major difference to how simple or minimal your bathroom space feels. White is a strong and obvious contender here, being a bright colour that brings spaciousness with it; white tiles and paints are especially effective when contrasted against blacks or dark slate colours.
