*This is a collaborative post on ways to make your home look more spacious
If you live in a small home, or you’re looking to make the space you’re working with seem bigger, then you’re not alone. It’s easy enough to add furniture to a large room to make the space seem more proportionate, but what are you supposed to do when the room is already at a size disadvantage? Let’s take a look at how you can make the most of your smaller rooms and make them look bigger.
When you’ve got a smaller space, it’s natural to push your furniture against the walls to create more space in the middle of the room. However, by doing this, you can inadvertently make the room feel more crowded. Instead, try leaving some space between the walls and any furniture you have to make it feel more airy. This works because light can bounce in and off your furniture, making it look more spacious.
While it might not be possible right now, you should also consider switching out any larger pieces of furniture as they can take up valuable room and light. Even if you do this piece by piece, you’ll begin to notice how much bigger your room starts to look.
Another way to give the illusion that your home is bigger is by using natural light. So, if you’ve got blinds that cover your windows, consider drawing them back or switching to roman blinds so that you can let more natural light into your home.
If it’s difficult to get lots of natural light in your room, particularly if you’ve got a small window, then you can strategically place lamps around your furniture to help the light bounce off empty areas and give the impression that the room is bigger than it is.
Another fantastic way of making your rooms look bigger is by hanging mirrors. They work well because they bounce and reflect light around the room, which will make it look brighter and airier. Not only that, but having mirrors in place also reflects the view in the mirror, which can trick your mind into thinking the space is bigger than it actually is.
If you’re unable to hang mirrors in your home, perhaps due to your landlord not allowing it, then why not consider using reflective ornaments instead? They will help bounce light around your room without the need to put any holes in your walls.
If you’ve got thick and heavy curtains, it’s going to make your room feel small and heavy. Instead, consider going for something that’s a little more airy like net curtains that will catch the breeze. You could also consider hanging longer drapes to trick the mind into thinking your rooms are taller.
Finally, sometimes a room can look small and cramped simply because there is a lot of clutter around the room. If you don’t want to get rid of anything, look into some smart storage solutions so that you’re able to put your belongings away when they’re not in use. You’ll be surprised at how much bigger your rooms look once you get rid of the clutter!
That was a nice read. I actually use one of the tips quite often at my house – mirrors. They especially work in bathrooms. Great hack!
