*This is a collaborative post on ways to stay social during the winter months
Winter months lend themselves to cosying up at home, watching films and reading books. While this can seem like a great way to avoid the cold, dark days, it can also mean it’s more difficult to maintain social relationships and keep in contact with others, especially for those who live alone.
Although there’s nothing wrong with taking a few duvet days and hibernating away from the world, a significant lack of social interaction can lead to depression and anxiety in some people. Social interaction and positive relationships can help cultivate a sense of wellbeing and improve cognitive abilities.
Discovering ways to be more social during winter might seem difficult but there are plenty of options if you’re looking to increase your interactions.
Rather than go out for brunch, why not host an event at home? People might prefer the thought of being warm and cosy inside rather than venturing out for a meal. You could ask your guests to contribute by bringing a selection of dishes or by providing the drinks.
Make it a special occasion by setting the right atmosphere. Have some relaxing music on in the background and brighten the space with atmospheric lighting.
The internet is a great tool for keeping in touch with others and even for making new friends. If you have a particular interest, you might find local clubs via the internet or forums which allow you to express your thoughts and knowledge around certain subjects. You can even develop your social interactions talking in chat rooms when playing games such as online bingo.
There are many benefits of taking up a new hobby. As well as learning a new skill and focusing your mind, it can give you a chance to meet like-minded individuals. There are plenty of options to choose from including writing, knitting, gardening, yoga, cooking, climbing and dancing.
Check out local community events for meet ups and clubs or why not start your own?
Offering your spare time to a local food bank, shelter or charity shop is a great way of meeting new people as well as a fantastic opportunity to give back to your community. If you have a particular skill, look for ways to help others and create new social interactions along the way.
As well as maintaining physical fitness, an exercise class can also open up your social circle. If you’re not keen on treadmills or weights, consider joining a dance or aerobics group in your local area.
Whatever way you decide to keep social, make sure it’s with something you enjoy. You’re more likely to meet others with similar interests and maintain those connections if the activity inspires and excites you.
