If you’re ready to take charge of your money but you find yourself overwhelmed by budget systems and tools, remember you don’t have to be a financial genius in order to manage your money. There are quite a few budgeting hacks you can use to help kick start your budgeting.

These tricks and budgeting hacks don’t mean you have to deprive yourself, or stare at a spreadsheet for hours. They’re designed to help you feel in control and confident about managing your money.

The ‘one-thing cutback’ rule

Overhauling your entire budget can be daunting, which is why the ‘one-thing cutback’ rule is a game-changer.

Instead of making loads of changes which may feel overwhelming, focus on reducing or eliminating one thing. It might be a subscription service you don’t use as much, or your weekly takeaway you instantly regret once you’ve eaten it. Commit to cutting back on one thing and redirect the money to savings, or paying off debt.

By focusing on one small change it will be easier to stick to. And once you’ve done that you can move onto another small change.

Budgeting hacks- the cash only challenge

Spending is so easy when you can just tap your card, and sometimes it’s easy to lose track of what you’re spending.

Try having some cash only days to help you reconnect with money. Pick a day and only use cash you have set aside for that day. You’ll probably realise how quick you can spend money and it may make you reevaluate.

This is especially good to do on days out or shopping days when spending can easily escalate. Paying in cash makes you feel the real weight of every purchase, and hopefully your spending will feel more like deliberate decisions and not just mindless swipes.

Track ‘happy expenses’ for a week

Tradition budgeting tends to focus on cutting expenses which can feel restrictive. But what if you focused on purchases that genuinely made you feel happy? That’s when budgeting hacks can make a real difference.

Write down everything you spend in a week and how much joy it brought you on a scale of 1 to 10. For example ‘£20 dinner with friends 9/10’, or ‘£9 lunch at the office 3/10’. At the end of the week, review your list and you’ll likely find patterns.

There may be certain expenses that don’t bring happiness that you can easily change. If buying lunch at the office doesn’t bring you joy then you may want to start bringing in your own food.

This method will shift your focus from what you can’t spend on to what you should spend on. This way you can adjust your budget to prioritise maximising joy and spending on the right things.

Budgeting hacks- pay yourself first!

Saving money can often be seen as an afterthought, the final thing you do if you have any money left. But the pay yourself first method flips it around so you save money before you do anything else. It doesn’t have to be a huge amount, but the key is being consistent.

Sometimes people call this method reverse budgeting, but it’s about making saving a priority.

Automating your savings will remove the temptation to spend that money elsewhere. Even if you start with just £10 or £20 a week, your savings will slowly grow.

Controlling your money with budgeting hacks is easier than you think

Starting to control your money doesn’t have to be complicated. And these four tricks or hacks can help you take control of your finances, without feeling restricted or out of your depth.

Start small. Pick one trick today and commit to trying it for a week.

These are great ideas for budgeting. We have tried doing the cash thing, it really does work, but I have found recently a few places seem to be card only.
