When travelling as a family, taking extra care to ensure everyone’s safety on the road is vital. From regular vehicle maintenance to good driving habits and careful journey planning, there are plenty of practical steps you can take to protect your loved ones and reduce the chance of any road traffic accident claims occurring.

Keep reading as we provide you with useful tips to help keep your family safe on every journey.

Carry out regular vehicle checks to keep your family safe while on the road

One of the most important things you can do is regularly check and maintain your car. This includes everything from your fluid levels to tread depth and electrics. By regularly checking and maintaining the various areas of your car, you can significantly reduce the chance of a breakdown, especially in dangerous locations like a motorway.

Some key checks include making sure your tyres have a depth of at least 1.6mm, all your fluids are topped up (especially before long journeys), and that all your lights work. Your lights are key to telling other drivers what you’re doing and can allow them to act safely, keeping everyone protected.

Plan your journey carefully

Planning your journey is a key way to reduce the risk. That’s because knowing the route in advance lets you anticipate potential hazards, manage your time, and reduce stress. These three factors are key contributors to accidents, so by limiting their impact ahead of time, you’re ensuring the journey is as safe as possible.

If you’ve got a long journey ahead, you can always plan rest stops in advance too. This gives you a chance to have a break and recover, ensuring your mind is well-rested throughout the journey.

Perhaps one of the best ways to keep your family safe is by driving safely and considering other road users. If you drive too quickly, are surrounded by distractions, or just aren’t considerate of other road users, this is extremely likely to cause an incident.

Driving is very complicated and risky, requiring our full attention at all times. Distractions can easily take your attention at key moments, potentially leading to collisions or other incidents. Additionally, leaving enough space from the car in front ensures you always have enough stopping distance, and gives you time to brake safely.

Use appropriate child and passenger restraints

Most people understand the various safety benefits of seatbelts. They stop you from being thrown from the car, reduce impact force, and are instrumental in saving lives.

Likewise, a child car seat provides all these same benefits for your kids. Their bodies are far smaller, which is why the adjustments provided by a car seat are crucial to their safety.
