Side Hustles You Can Start Today To Earn Extra Cash

Notebook saying side hustle ideas and a bunch of 100 dollar bills

Life’s expensive, and almost all of us could do with some extra cash. Having a side-hustle, even one you don’t do all the time, can change your finances. You may be saving for a big purchase, paying off debt, or wanting to make a bit of extra spending money. There are loads of side hustles you can start today to earn extra cash, but one thing to remember is if you’re earning any income from these then you will need to register as self employed (even if you don’t earn enough to pay extra taxes). If you’re unsure then check out taxforsidehustles from the Government.

Here are some of the side hustles you can start today!

Pet sitting and dog walking

Animal lovers and those with experience of pets (or pets yourself) can make money by looking after others pets.

There are lots of sites you can sign up to to become a pet sitter such as Rover, Cat in a flat or Trusted Housesitters. People will post jobs with the information of what they require and you can register with your experience and apply for the jobs. Pet sitting may include going to feed the pets, keep them company, clear out litter trays or walk them (depending on the animal).

You can also use sites like Rover, Wag! or PawShake for dog walking opportunities as well.

Side hustles you can start today- selling printables

Creating and selling digital printables on Etsy is a great way to earn a passive income. Budget planners, lists, decorative images and meal planners are always in demand, and once you’ve designed them they can be sold repeatedly with no extra work.

There will be a lot of competition for printable/ downloadable content, so make sure what you’re offering is unique.

Delivery driving

Companies like Uber Eats and Deliveroo can be a great way for you to make money on your own schedule by delivering food in your local area.

You can choose when to appear available, and you can accept or reject jobs. With something like this you’ll need to check your vehicle insurance to make sure you’re covered for work use, and set aside money for fuel/ expenses.

Side hustles you can start today- writing

If you have a way with words then freelance writing can be a good thing to start. Websites like Upwork, Fiverr, and PeoplePerHour connect writers with clients looking for blog posts, articles, and even social media content.

PeoplePerHour is where I started my journey, before blogging started making me an income. And yes you may have to start off writing for lower that you’d like but once you’ve built things up I was happy with the extra money I was bringing in.

Online tutoring

If you’re knowledgeable in a subject, tutoring can be a fantastic way to make money. Sites like MyTutor allow you to teach subjects from the comfort of your own home.

You may be fluent in a foreign language and can help students, or perhaps you’re well educated in maths or science and can help kids learn more.

Side hustles you can start today- selling online

This seems to be one of the most common side hustles, and there are two avenues to this.

If you simply have items at home you no longer use or love you can use platforms like Vinted, Depop and eBay to sell them and make some extra cash. Vinted seems to be one of the biggest platforms at the moment and is the one I use. When I first started selling on Vinted I did a Vinted vs Depop comparison, and another follow up post with some tips on how I’ve sold things on Vinted.

Selling your own items for lower than you paid means you won’t need to pay taxes as it’s just decluttering. But you can also choose to buy to resell and turn it into more of a side hustle. Doing this will mean you need to register and pay taxes on any earnings, but it can be lucrative as sometimes people selling at charity shops and car boot sales don’t know the true value of their items.

Surveys and market research

I use a site called Prolific for surveys and when baby is here it’s something I want to do more of during feeds and other down time. But there are loads of sites out there that will pay you a small amount to answer some questions. You may only get a few pence or pounds each time, but they can be quick and easy and the money builds up.

With market research these are generally much bigger opportunities. I’ve done a few over the phone and been paid anything from £50 to £150 depending on the complexity. There are loads of sites you can use like YouGov and Take Part in Research.
