Europe offers an incredible choice of skiing experiences, from the dizzying heights of the French Alps to the sun-drenched peaks of the Italian Dolomites. Each valley and village has their own distinct character, cuisine and atmosphere just waiting to be explored.

Finding the one that perfectly matches your idea of a winter getaway is the key to transforming a good holiday into an unforgettable one. Here’s a selection of some of the most popular destinations in Europe for a ski trip.

Val Thorens, France

As Europe’s highest resort, Val Thorens offers a snow-sure guarantee that is hard to beat. The season often stretches from November to May.

The exceptional Val Thorens ski resort provides doorstep skiing from the majority of its accommodation, meaning you waste no time getting to the slopes. It sits at the head of the enormous Three Valleys, the world’s largest interconnected ski area, giving you access to over 600km of pistes.

To make the most of your getaway, plan a day trip skiing across the valleys to Méribel. Or pick Courchevel for a change of scenery and the chance to explore your beautiful surroundings.

St. Anton, Austria

If you’re an advanced skier seeking a serious challenge and a lively social scene, St. Anton should be at the top of your list.

The Austrian resort is famous for its steep, demanding runs and vast, accessible off-piste terrain. It’s noted as the origin of modern alpine skiing, and its reputation is well-earned.

The town itself buzzes with energy, and the après-ski is legendary, kicking off on the slopes in bustling mountain bars long before the last lift closes. For the ultimate experience, hire a local guide to safely navigate the best powder fields.

Zermatt, Switzerland

Skiing under the gaze of the iconic Matterhorn mountain is an experience every skier should have.

Zermatt combines high-altitude, snow-sure glacier skiing with breathtaking scenery and a charming, car-free village. The ski area is extensive, linking with Cervinia over the border in Italy. This would allow you to ski two countries in one day.

Beyond the slopes, Zermatt is a foodie paradise, renowned for its exceptional mountain restaurants. Be sure to book a table well in advance to secure a table at one of the top culinary spots with a view.

Cortina d’Ampezzo, Italy

For a truly stylish and scenic ski holiday, Cortina d’Ampezzo is unparalleled. Set amidst the stunning jagged peaks of the Dolomites, a UNESCO World Heritage site, the scenery is simply spectacular.

The skiing is best suited to intermediates, with miles of beautifully groomed, cruising runs perfect for covering ground. The Italian approach to a ski day is more relaxed here, too. People take long, sun-drenched lunches at rustic mountain rifugi and enjoy an evening stroll in the fashionable town centre.
