Budgeting is one of the most important steps to take control of your finances. But when it comes to tracking your money, there’s often a big debate: should you use spreadsheets or budgeting apps? Both can work, but it depends on your style, goals, and how much time you want to spend managing your finances.

Here’s a breakdown of the pros and cons of each approach to help you decide when comparing spreadsheets vs apps

Spreadsheets: Flexibility and control

Spreadsheets are a classic option, and for good reason. They give you complete control over how you organise your money.

Pros:

Cons:

Budgeting apps: Convenience and automation

Apps have become increasingly popular, especially for busy people who want real-time insights without extra effort.

Pros:

Cons:

Which one should you choose?

There’s no right or wrong answer in the battle of spreadsheets vs apps— it comes down to what works for you.

You don’t have to choose just one. Many people use a combination: apps for day-to-day tracking and spreadsheets for long-term planning, goal setting, and analysis.

Bottom line: Budgeting isn’t about the tools you use — it’s about consistency and awareness. Whether it’s a spreadsheet or an app, the key is to keep track of your money and make informed decisions.

I used to use spreadsheets back in the day, but now I just use my phone or tablet with my app. It’s so much more convenient.

I use an app to do my budgeting. I’m self employeed, so I can count it as a business expense.

I will have to say this – I have been using spreadsheets like forever and they do just fine if not better than most apps. 100%.

I have to admit I find spreedsheets are what I use. I find them easy probably as I have been using them for years. Aps are great but I find I am more old school

I really need to get my head more into budgeting. I’m not sure which way would be easier for me, but I’m more tempted to say apps. Spreadsheets kinda feel like just one more thing to add to the jobs list. I need to get my head in the game though a bit more tbf. I find it difficult being self employed getting paid different amounts at different times throughout the month. I feel like it’s something I’m never going to have 100% control over.

I still use spreadsheets at the moment as I just haven’t found the right app for me yet! Hopefully one day as it would make my life a lot easier!

I used an app called Mint for a few years and it worked just fine. It wasn’t perfect but everything was automated, which saved me a lot of time and headaches.

I’d like to get my spending under control. There are pluses and minuses for using spreadsheets versus apps. My husband uses a spreadsheet to track our expenses, but I’m more of an app person.

I do like using apps instead of using spreadsheets, as so many apps automatically do the work for me! It’s interesting to hear both methods compaired.
