Liquid lipsticks are absolutely everywhere at the moment, and while it took me a while to get into them I have to admit I am a full convert. The longevity of these versus a lipstick/ lip pen is insane, and I am so lazy it’s nice to not have to keep topping up. I currently own five brands of liquid lipstick, none of which I feel are ‘high end’ or expensive, with the most costly being about £14. I thought I’d do this run down now as I know when I head to New York I’ll be grabbing some Kat Von D and Anastacia Beverley Hills one so I wanted to narrow down the best of what I have to pit against them. (FYI since writing this post I now own 4 Kat Von D lipsticks but thought I’d keep them for a seperate post!)
The five brands I’ll be talking about are the cheap eBay liquid lipsticks which I have mentioned quite a few times before (I own 4 shades), MUA luxe Whipped and Velvet Whipped (I own 2 shades), NYX Soft Matte Lip Cream (I own 2 shades), Revlon Ultra HD Matte Lipcolor (I own just 1 shade) and the Sephora Cream Lip Stains (I currently own 2 but this will change soon!)
I did write a lot more in this post but realised it was about 1,500 words *oops* so massively culled how much I said so excuse the short, snappy sentences.
Ebay- 4.5/5
Application was easy. One wand full was enough for full coverage and easy to line lips as a small applicator. It doesn’t stay liquid for too long and dries quickly.
MUA- 2.5/5
Applicator a little larger so hard to apply straight (as you can see from being rushed with the purple shade). Dries quickly but if you don’t go for a bright/ dark shade the colour pigmentation isn’t great.
NYX- 4/5
Easy to apply and one wand full is enough product. Colour pigmentation is good but the colours I swatched (and own) are nothing like they are on the tube. The super dark mauve purple colour which you can see in the main image doesn’t translate anywhere near that dark on my lips.
Revlon- 3/5
Good sized applicator but there wasn’t enough product so I had to dip it back in again. Heavily scented which put me off.
Sephora- 5/5
Standard doe applicator so easy to apply. The wand isn’t bulky so it’s easy to line the lips. Dries relatively quickly and the cover always looks even.
Ebay- 3.5/5
Isn’t too drying on the lips but does show up quite a few lines. Light weight. But when you put your lips together it is quite sticky like a gloss, but this doesn’t ruin the colour.
MUA- 3.5/5
Quite drying and to get the right pigmentation you need a lot of product so it’s quite heavy. The velvet version dried quickly (Purple) but the Velvet Whipped (nude) appeared more glossy.
NYX- 3/5
Don’t dry quickly, even an hour later there are patches which look ‘wet’ and non-matte. Colour moves a little because of this. Works better if you blot with a tissue because although it tones the colour down it looks drier and matter.
Revlon- 4/5
Despite applying like a gloss it isn’t shiny or sticky and dries super matte. Doesn’t dry out the lips so you can feel it on like you would a lipstick.
Sephora- 4/5
A little drying but with the right prep this wasn’t an issue. Dried quickly on the lips. Really light weight that you won’t feel it on.
I tried all of these through a normal day at work which includes eating breakfast and lunch and drinking a lot at my desk (without a straw) so the comparison between longevity is equal.
Ebay- 4/5
After about six hours there was only minimal fading around the middle of my lips where they meet. Faded during the day but not for a while. Only needed topping up once to last the whole day.
MUA- 2/5
The nude was so bad it came off my lips within an hour of wearing it. The purple was so clung to my lips that it faded a lot in the middle of my lips and the rest was hard to scrub off.
NYX- 2.5/5
Smudges quite a lot as the colour doesn’t dry so I ended up with a lot of colour movement. Colour lasts but bleeds a lot.
Revlon- 3/5
Faded quite a lot in the first hour from a deep pink to a candy pink. The faded colour lasted and was fine for shorter periods but I’d have to reapply on nights out for vibrant colour. Superior to a standard lipstick but not the best liquid lipstick.
Sephora- 4.5/5
Great longevity. Still on my lips in full-colour glory six hours later and even nine hours are application there was minimal fading.
Thank you, I found this really interesting I usually stay away from these as have tried them a long time ago and found it to be sticky and I just did not like it. I might now be persuaded to give them another try x
Love the way you have written this review. Really great detail. I might just buy one of these, they sounds great
Great post. I have never really tried many of these types as I felt they would be quite sticky. Will have to check a few out xx
Everyone says how amazing Sephora is, but I’ve yet to try and of their products!
I wish we could get Sephora makeup much more easily than the US or France lol x
Oh wow these colours are all so beautiful!! I really want to try the sephora one with it being so long lasting xxx

I would love to try the NYX and Sephora.
Liquid lipsticks are everywhere at the moment, everyone and their mother is bringing them out, so it was nice to see someone be totally honest about a large selection!

Do you know I have never tried a liquid lipstick but you have convinced me to at least give it a try now 🙂 x
I’ve never tried a liquid lipstick but if they last longer than most lip stuff, I’m well on board!
Sounds like Sephora is the clear winner. I don’t often wear lipstick but I fancy something new for the summer!
Great review – the Sephora ones look like they are the winners but I guess you’d expect it for the cost. Looking forward to hearing about the Kat Von D lipsticks!
I love Sephora, it’s like a treasure chest of beauty products. These look lovely.
Great post, you have featured a large range of lipsticks there, makes it easier for us to chose what to get.
I think I have been put off liquid lipsticks by MUA which I tried last year and was not impressed.
I love liquid lipsticks, they feel so much nicer when putting them on, lovely choice of lipsticks in this post
There’s a few liquid lipsticks I have my eye on at the moment. I’ve heard the Stila ones are worth checking out.
