Recently I seem to have had a huge push on smaller DIY projects. I think because I’ve been in my flat for four and a half years’ now I want to change and add things, and make it even more my own. The latest thing I’ve wanted to do is add some shelves into certain areas of my flat. Firstly it started with needing a shelf created in my spare bedroom for my crazy Pop Vinyl collection which is getting out of control now. They were balancing in a crazy pile on the back of the sofa bed in my spare bedroom (see the image here). My issue was all the shelves which were long enough for what I wanted were super deep and I didn’t want it to stick out far from the wall/ be much deeper than the Pop Vinyl boxes. When I realized this I knew it was going to have to be a DIY project.
When I thought this I knew if I wanted any more shelving done I might as well do it at the same time for ease so I decided I was going to create a similar shelf in my bedroom to sit on the wall above my bed and then three smaller shelves to line the wall above where my TV currently lives in my living room as the space was looking a bit bare. After some searching online and trips to B&Q/ Wickes I knew they were all pretty much going to need to be made from scratch which is where my dad came in, DIY isn’t my strongest point, I’m more of an ideas person.
I didn’t mind cutting down the length of wood for shelves but I didn’t want to be shaving some of the depth off as it’s hard to be totally straight for longer lengths and I didn’t want them to look messy so I chose one piece of wood just under 15cm deep for my Pop Vinyl shelves and some 12cm deep for the other areas. Lengths would have to be cut down but that’s an easier job. Next up was the colour of the shelves as I didn’t want wood, and black coloured wood just doesn’t really seem to be a thing so we bought some black wood paint and once they were cut to the right sizes the wood was painted black. Anyone who knows me will know blacks my fav!
Next step was the brackets, as the ones in both bedrooms were going to be quite long (about 1-1.2m) I was going to need three for each of these and then another six for each end of the other shelves in my living room. Now brackets aren’t the nicest looking things and can sometimes look a bit bulky so I knew I needed to choose the colour carefully so I bought some spray paints to make the living room ones a copper/ rose gold as I knew that was the theme, gold for my bedroom one as that was the theme there and then a matte black in my spare bedroom.
Once this was done it was just a case of attaching them onto the wall and styling the shelves as I wanted (excluding the Pop Vinyl one) which of course was my favourite part and to be honest I bought most of the items before the wood. As you can see I have kept to a gold theme in my bedroom and a rose gold/ copper theme in my living room.
