The Importance Of Deep Cleaning Carpets When You’re Moving

Before I bought my current flat I lived in rented accommodation for a year while I decided what the hell I was going to do with my life (even now I still don’t know) and most people have been in rented accommodation at some point in their lives whether it’s during university or that first flatshare when you’ve got a ‘proper’ job.

Bissell are an expert in floor care and did some research recently which said that “Despite 40% of renters sacrificing more than half of their monthly incomes on rent, more than a quarter of UK tenants have moved into dirty properties.” Now I was quite lucky and my rented flat wasn’t in too bad a condition but I’ve seen some friends who have moved into pretty grimy looking properties and it’s worrying, especially in London as people are doing this because it’s all that they can afford.

Over a quarter of tenants move into unclean properties and the biggest problems are damp, mold, and dirty or stained carpets which can have a massive impact on our health. While we all want our homes to look good our health is far more important and it’s scary to think how much bacteria call carpets it’s home.

I have laminate flooring within my hallway and open plan living/ kitchen area so it’s only the bedrooms that have carpet and I make sure that I don’t wear shoes in those rooms mainly because I don’t want to mark or stain something I paid quite a lot of money for. But it’s reported that 75% of Brits still wear their shoes around the home which can traipse around Escherichia Coli which is often found in human and animal waste. On top of this 41% of people have never washed their carpets yet 59% of people admit to adopting the 3-second rule when it comes to eating off the floor which isn’t good if you’ve got a carpet you’ve never cleaned.

Only 26% of tenants expected carpets to be cleaned before moving into their accommodation which as a stat shocks me because I’d fully expect the carpet to be clean when I moved in and then my responsibility while I’m living there. Unwashed carpets are a prime culprit for dust mites which can put people at a higher risk of asthma, eczema, and allergies but you can avoid that my cleaning your carpets around twice a year.

The reality is I had new carpet put in around 2-2.5 years ago and I have never cleaned it so when I was sent the BISSELL ProHeat 2X Revolution* carpet cleaner I knew it was the perfect time to rectify that. In my mind carpet cleaners are big bulky pieces of equipment but this one was so lightweight and easy to maneuver so it was really easy to move around the area. The suction is pretty powerful so it dries the carpets in about an hour but I found mine dried even quicker probably helped by the nice weather and the fact that I had windows open during the process, a perk of doing it in the summertime.

When it comes to me moving out of my current flat I know I’ll be giving my carpets a deep clean to ensure that it looks as nice as possible when the new buyers come in because no one wants to move into a new home and it be dirty but also unhygienic.

It is crazy how dirty carpets can get isn’t it! We decided to not have carpets at all when we moved here so it’s all hard with the odd mat. This sounds like a great way to make sure your carpets are clean moving or not as well.

Oh gosh ! this would be a blessing ! Our carpets get absolutely filthy with kids running around

  3. Ann Snook says:

It honestly should be the landlord’s responsibility to do this, but cleaning the carpets yourself is a nice gesture just in case. I’m glad that my current home has all hardwood floors so it’ll be easy to clean when I move out!

When we moved into our new house we had to have the carpets deep cleaned twice! There was a lingering pet smell we just could not get rid of, it was awful.

My husband and my kids have a big problem with dust so we decided not to put a carpet in our house so I will never have a problem in terms of cleaning carpet. But this carpet cleaner looks so easy to use and looks like a great help to all household on cleaning their carpets.

Damn, all the stats made me really reflect haha
I always take my shoes off straight away and I know my mum cleans the carpet but it still makes you think how much bacteria hides in there!

I totally hear you on this! I have slippers in the porch that people can pop on, so the carpets dont get too dirty! 🙂 x

This looks like a really good vacuum for carpet cleaning. I used to go crazy cleaning carpets when my children were still young! They are grown now , so you’d think I have it easy – oh no. There is THE dog that goes in and out of the house and who knows what kind of germs he brought in. Getting a Bissell will be better than hiring carpet cleaners.

This sounds fab! We’ve only been living in our house a year but I already want to shampoo the carpets and make them all clean and fluffy again, especially with our dog! It’s amazing how many people don’t clean carpets before moving, or even hover regularly.

This looks great. I have cream carpets from the homeowner before and a dog. I really could do with something like this 🙂

  13. The London Mum says:

I can’t believe only 26% of tenants expect a thorough carpet clean!

I love the look of this, we’re hoping to move home next month so it would be a good time to get one and use it for the place we’re moving out of as well as the one we’re moving in to. I’ve only ever hired them before but would love to own one.

I rent and I literally do a mass deep clean before I move In or out so this actually looks perfect because before now I have scrubbed carpets this would save some time for sure x

What a brilliant idea. I’m not moving any time soon but I definitely need one of these. I was thinking about hiring a carpet cleaner but this seems like a much more cost effective option in the long run and it sounds as thought it works a treat too! xxx

  17. Laura says:

Oh wow I really need one of these for my carpets – we are planning on moving soon and with two young kids my carpets have certainly seen cleaner and brighter days! This sounds ace

Our tenancy ends in less than a month and we could really do with something like this so we can sort our carpets out!
