Eight Reasons Why The Hotel Du Vin Is A Great Hotel For Your Weekend Trip To York

Earlier this month I spent a long weekend in York which was planned by the team at Visit York, so I was booked into a hotel on their behalf. We were booked into the Hotel Du Vin & Bistro which is a boutique hotel which lies within a Grade II lised mansion house giving it so much character. Located in the building are 44 stylish rooms and suites complete with custom-made beds, monsoon showers and roll-top baths in the rooms.

Whenever me and Luke go away we like to opt for boutique hotels as opposed to chain hotels so the Hotel Du Vin is exactly the kind of place we’d pick on our own. Check out just eight of the reasons why the hotel is a great base for a weekend in York:

Hotel Du Vin is just 10 mins from the station

The easiest way to get into the city is via train as it’s less than 2 hours from London and less than 3 hours from Edinburgh on the East Coast Rail. When you arrive the last thing you want to do is trek for too long to get to your hotel and the Hotel Du Vin is just a 10 minute walk from the station. This makes it super conveniant both when you arrive to check in and going back to the station on your final day.

It’s a short walk to main the attractions

Alongside being close to the station the hotel is also just a short walk to the main attractions in the city with the Jorvik Centre, Chocolate Story and York Minster around a 20 minute walk. Having a short walk towards the attractions means you don’t have to tackle public transport to get anywhere, but the Hotel Du Vin is also opposite one of the stops on the hop on, hop off bus tour (The Mount) so you can jump straight onto the sightseeing bus.

Quiet area away from the hustle and bustle

One of the things which puts me off from hotels right in the city centre is that they can be pretty loud and that doesn’t make for a relaxing trip. The Hotel Du Vin & Bistro is close enough to attractions to walk to but far enough away that you don’t have to worry about noise at night or distractions especially at the weekend when the bars and clubs can be quite busy.

There’s a Sainsburys across the road

It’s always good to have convienance close by and there’s a small Sainsbury’s just across the road from the Hotel Du Vin. During our first day we bought a few small bottles of gin to enjoy in our hotel room and therefore we were able to pick up some tonics and drinks from the Sainsbury’s. This is also great if you’re on a budget and want to buy some snacks and sandwiches as opposed to buying lunch as you can store it in the fridge in the room.

The beds are very comfortable

All of the beds in the Hotel Du Vin have handsprung mattresses and soft Egyptian coton bed linen making them so comfortable. We have a great mattress at home and find it hard to get anything that compares when we go away but our sleep at the Hotel Du Vin was just as great as it is when we’re at home. When you opt for a double room the beds are queen sized which gave us an extra special treat compared to our king size bed at home.

There are high ceilings so it maintains temperature well

The Hotel Du Vin in York is an old orphanage which is a Grade II listed building meaning that the ceilings are really high and the rooms seem really big. We went in the middle of the summertime at the beginning of August meaning that the room was quite warm when we first walked in but the in room air conditioning worked fantasically and the high ceilings mean that the temperature was maintained well.

The breakfast is great

We had a room on a B&B basis which you can choose when you book a room, or you can opt for a stay on a room only basis. I’d highly suggest opting for the breakfast option as it’s a great start to the day and all of the food was freshly cooked to the highest quality as opposed to just being a buffet like you get for a lot of hotel breakfasts. Alongside bread, pastries, cereal and juice you could choose a cooked item from the menu which was included within the price.

Relax back in a roll top bath

Many of the rooms have roll top baths and our superior room had one located within the main room by the windows which was a great way to relax after a long day walking throughout the city. The bath was absolutely huge so much so that Luke could properly lay out without having to bend his legs which at 6 foot 2 is pretty impressive. You won’t need to wait long for the bath to fill up as despite the size as ours took less than 5 minutes to fill up ready for a relaxing soak.
