Empties Part 4: What (Not) To Buy

September 6, 2018
Empties Perfume and Beauty

I can’t believe I’m on my fourth empties post, especially considering how many products I’ve got in this edition. I am trying really hard to focus and actually use up products rather than flit between loads and never finishing anything.

This month there’s another mascara and it’s Benefit’s Rollerlash which has been used up. I’m a big fan of Benefit mascara’s and this one gives a really good lift to the lashes (hence the name) and it did stay, although I do prefer thicker chunkier lashes. Because of this I probably won’t repurchase and I might try out the new Bad Girl Bang when its time for a new mascara.

Next up I’ve finished another perfume which is impressive for me as I rarely ever get through a full one. Finishing the Jo Malone Lime, Basil and Mandarin cologne did make me upset though as I absolutely love this one. The scent is so fresh and fruity which is my favourite when it comes to perfumes and the scent stuck around for quite a while after. I’m a huge fan of Jo Malone cologne’s so when I’ve used up a few more I’ll be repurchasing this.

On my recent stay in York, I finished my Mini Colour Stay Shampoo* which has been great as it’s so hard to find mini’s of colour protecting haircare and most of the time I either need to decant larger bottles or go for something without colour protection. It was really creamy and left my hair feeling very nourished so I’d repurchase this as my travel shampoo of choice.

Empties Skincare

Sure is my go-to deodorant so it’s no surprise I finished this Invisible Black + White deodorant, in fact, I’m surprised I don’t go through more of this. There isn’t much to say about this as most people probably know about this but it doesn’t leave white marks (as long as you shake it well before) and it’s great protection under the arms so I’ll keep on repurchasing this.

Next up is my latest micellar water and it’s the Bioderma Hydrabio H20 micellar water*. For a while ,I always wondered if it was worth spending the extra money on this and I have to admit when it’s on promo in Boots and isn’t much pricier than Garnier I think I’d take the plunge as it seems to remove more of my eye makeup than the Garnier water does, even waterproof mascara and my skins felt a little more hydrated using it. I would definitely buy this again.

The final skincare item is the Time Bomb Complexion Cocktail* which I’ve been using as a liquid cleanser when I’ve been too lazy to use a solid balm. It provides a great second lift of my makeup after using micellar water and it’s really smooth on my skin without drying it out or leaving it oily, plus it’s really quick. But I don’t think I’d repurchase it as I feel the solid balms do slightly better on my skin and cut through more.

Empties Shower Gels

The first of two shower gels is the Caudalie Gel Douche which I bought in Paris when I went last year. The scent was lovely and it foamed up well but I just don’t think it was anything special to spend that extra bit of money on so I don’t think I’d repurchase.

The next full sized shower gel is the Body Shop Cranberry one which came from their festive collection last year. The fact that I am still using up Christmas items shows how much I own. I absolutely love the Body Shop shower gels are the scents are always strong but not overpowering which is a spot on description of th cranberry one, and although it’s a festive scent it didn’t feel too heavy for the summer. I also think these are really good value (around £5-6) for that amout of product you get so I’d definitely purchase more of these.

The final shower product I used up was a mini Ritual of Shakura Shower Foam. I have just started getting into more of the Rituals skincare items and they’re one of my favourite higher end brands. The shower foams are great as they’re so easy to use and you don’t need much water to get the foam to lather up, my only complaint is that it can be quite hard to get it all out of the bottle so it doesn’t seem to last too long. I think I would repurchase this but only as a one off. Empties Haicare IGK

I finished my Hot Girls hydrating shampoo and hydrating conditioner from IGK last month. I was so excited to give these a go as I’ve heard so many rave things about IGK and other products from the range I’ve tried have been really good. While there was nothing wrong with these two I just didn’t feel they were anything special to justify the increase in price compared to something like the John Frieda one’s I buy which are around £10 for a shampoo and conditioner (which is half the price of the shampoo alone!) I won’t be repurchasing this set but I would be keen to potentially try out another set in the range as a comparison.Empties Candles

The final two items which I finished this month were both candles. The first being this H&M Orange Candle which smelt really good for a reasonably cheap candle. For it’s price it’s really good and the burn time was pretty reasonable considering it’s size so I’d probably repurchase this.

The final item I finished was my Garnet Candle by Gemporia*. I was sent this back when it was my birthday and I’ve only just finished it because it just seemed too pretty to finish with stones set all along the top of the candle itself. It had a warm scent but it wasn’t particularly strong so I usually burnt it alongside having my melts going but it was a really solid candle. I don’t think I’d repurchase this again but I’d definitely buy one as a gift as they’re very pretty candles.

I hardly ever empty anything. Haha. I am trying to empty makeup before I buy any more though. 🙂

I find this such an interesting post. I love reading reviews of things before I purchase them so these style of articles are so very helpful!

Wow. An empties post is fun to read. What I usually empty and replace are shampoos, deodorants, soaps and facial wash. I have a lot of makeup products – most of them given by my sister and bff, but there’s not one that have been emptied out lol

  5. Emma says:

Wow, I hardly ever use anything to empty, this is a great idea!

I love that you’re honest about what you would purchase again – so often bloggers tell you everything is great! The body shop shower gels sound lovely – I’m definitely more of a budget person as I find brands like Caudalie nice but a little too £££ when compared to more affordable brands that feel (and smell) just as good.

I’m so intrigued by the Bioderma Hydrabio H20 micellar water – I really need to get a good micellar water into my routine!

My wife shares your problem as well, she hardly ever empties anything! This is a great idea. Thank you for your reviews!

I am a big fan of the rollerlash mascara so interesting that you weren’t so keen. But the micellar water sounds amazing – I’ve been looking for a new one to try

I always love reading empties posts as I believe they really do show a true review of the products. I hadn’t realised H&M did candles – I will have to check them out!

  12. Kara says:

I love my candles and hate spending lots of money on them so the H&M sound great

What a great idea for a post, it shows how happy you are with a product through to the end. I love the time bomb products and use the invisible marks deodorant, it really does the job.

  14. Stephen says:

I have never thought of doing an empties post, that said, Rachel bins everything before I would have a chance anyway!

I enjoy reading your empties post, and to be honest…I don’t think I use up as much as the products you use. The Bodyshop Cranberry and H&M Orange Candle would be something I would have liked to get myself.

  16. John Sallie says:

Even though I myself do not purchase any of these products I do believe that you are doing others a service by reviewing them. Keep up the good writing.

Interesting post, I am great at emptying the bathroom stuff like shampoos, conditioners and deodorants. But I am a nightmare at emptying my makeup and I realised this clearing out my two make up bags the other day oop, so this is something I am going to work on.

This is certainly an interesting concept for a post as it shows that you like the product but also draws attention, that whilst not finishing products and purchasing similar items, is just not cost effective. So, I am going to take up the empties challenge.

What a great way to spread the word about decent products. I hear all the hype about jo malone but also the price tag but must be fab if you repurchase so maybe worth the plunge

  19. Jennifer Prince says:

I love this! So many tell you what to buy and say that everything is fab, but I adore that you actually told us what you wouldn’t get again. Thanks for your honesty. 🙂
