Eight Things You Have To Do On A Trip To Liverpool

Liverpool Liver Building

Two years back now I headed to Liverpool for a quick weekend trip away with my parents. And it was such a lovely weekend. I knew Liverpool would be an interesting city to explore but I never expected to fall in love so quickly. You can read my 36-hour travel guide here and get an idea of where is best to stay here. But until then here are eight things you need to experience if you’re planning on hitting up the city.

Things to do on a trip to Liverpool: Take a ferry across the Mersey

Back in the 1960s, there was a famous song called ‘Ferry Cross The Mersey’ which didn’t mean much to me. But my parents knew all about it when I mentioned taking a ferry across the river Mersey. I bought a combi bus and boat ticket which worked out much cheaper. The views from the ferry aren’t spectactular it’s another nice to see the city. Grab a seat by the side upstairs and bask in the breeze as you go past the UNESCO heritage site which is Liverpool’s Maritime Docks.

Liverpool Music

What to do in Liverpool: Visit the British Music Experience

There’s a huge amount of musical history in Liverpool mainly from The Beatles. But the British Music Experience tells the story of all music from the post-war 1940s right up to the modern day. There’s so much information about the changes in music from rock and roll to jazz to the new romantics. It’s so interesting seeing how it all developed.

The entire exhibition is filled with costumes, memorabilia, props and so much more so it’s an absolute must visit if you love any form of music. There’s a studio at the end with loads of keyboards, guitars, bass guitars and drum kits so you can play around. It’s a chance to see whether you’ve got any hidden talents. There’s also a dance studio to try out some moves which we found very entertaining.

Going on a trip to Liverpool? Shop at Liverpool ONE

For me you can’t have a trip away without some sort of retail therapy. So Shopping in Liverpool ONE needs to be on your must-dos when away. There are so many shops to choose from so there’s something for everyone.

There’s also 35 different restaurants and bars so if you overindulge in retail therapy you can kick back. It’s also the spot of an Odeon IMAX cinema if you fancy watching a movie during your stay.

beatles statue

Things you have to do in Liverpool: Pose with The Beatles Statue

One of the most photographed things in Liverpool is the statue of The Beatles. It is situated on the pier right outside the British Music Experience. Considering the fact that I was there late morning on a Saturday it wasn’t as crowded as I had expected. So make sure you head over and get your photo taken with the statue commemorating the most important and famous Liverpudlian export.

Don’t miss this in Liverpool: Go on the City Explorer bus tour

I am a huge fan of bus tours in cities as I find you learn so much about the area. They’re also great for getting your bearings and just transporting you around the city. Our tour lasted just under an hour with sights across the city and plenty of important information about the city. This included the Mersey River, the cathedrals and churches and The Beatles spots. You can do a special Beatles tour or Liverpool FC tour if you’re more inclined.

Liverpool Beatles Experience

Must do’s in Liverpool: Do the Beatles Experience

Talking about The Beatles you can’t go on a trip to Liverpool without visiting The Beatles Experience which is housed over two sights. The main one on Albert Dock holds a walk through of the history of the band. Including their childhood, how they met and previous members right through to their first shows, traveling abroad and their iconic tracks.

Going through the history was so interesting especially when you find out more about the member’s post-break up. For example, did you know Ringo was the voice of the 1980’s Thomas The Tank engine and Paul owns the rights to a lot of the Buddy Holly and Grease songs?!

Drinking spots in Liverpool: Have a drink at Smugglers Cove

One of Liverpool’s most famous cocktail bars Smugglers Cove specializes in rum-based drinks, although they serve so much more. The bar is a Guinness world record holder for the most varieties of rum commercially available with 151 different types available in-house, definitely something to boast about. There’s a slight pirate theme going on around the bar and it’s a beautiful place to explore the decor and relax with a well deserved cocktail.

radio city tower views

Things to do in Liverpool: Head Up The Radio City Tower

To get some 360-degree views of the city head up the Radio City tower, home of the cities local radio stations where on a clear day you can see into North Wales, sadly it wasn’t that clear when I went. Heading up hundreds of meters the views are lovely and you can see what the city is like from a height, plus at just £5 you can’t go wrong.
