Three Ways To Create The Best Working Environment And Stop Too Much Procrastination

How to make your desk look nice

AD - This is a collaborative post but all thoughts and opinions are my own

In my old flat we had a spare bedroom with a desk and before Luke moved in it was meant to be my office, but even with the designated space I never used it. I was the type of person who would work sitting on the sofa with my laptop on my lap. Looking back I know this was bad not just from a physical point of view as my back got little support and my laptop was resting on my legs, but I don’t think I was anywhere near as productive.

Creating the best working environment for you

Alongside sitting on the sofa I’d generally have the TV playing in the background, and albeit it was generally reruns of How I Met Your Mother, but I would still get distracted. When we moved into my parent’s house I knew I didn’t want to do my work in our bedroom as I’d pretty much never leave that room. And I wanted a space where I could work and then move away when I wanted to do something else. While I don’t currently have a physical desk, I have a set up at the dining room table so I have a supportive chair and all of the things around me that I need. If you do any working from home, here are some ways to create the best working environment.

Minimize the other technology around you

I am quite a procrastinator and find having other technology around me quite a struggle when it comes to working. Set up a working space where there’s no TV to pull you into the Netflix void and keep your mobile phone away from you to stop the temptation of going on an Instagram scroll.

Without having a TV in my new working space I do find that I am able to get more engrossed into my work and I finish things much quicker. This means I then have more me-time, so if I do want to go and watch the latest Ru Paul’s episode, or pop a face mask on and read I can.

Keep your workspace clean and tidy

Every single time I give my laptop screen a clean it makes me feel a little bit ill and the thought of my keyboard scares me a little. Making sure that your working environment is clean is so important when it comes to being productive as no one likes working when their space is dusty or dirty. I tend to use a mixture of antibacterial sprays and wipes to make sure that my laptop and mouse are clean but also the actual workspace I’m on.

If you need to clean a commercial space then https://www.realcleaning.co.uk/ have services all across the UK to help take the stress away.

Have items around you that you need, but also items which make you happy

When you’re setting up your working environment make sure that you have everything you need on hand. This could be hard drives, pens, memory cards or anything else, but if you need it to work at any point have it on hand. If you work from home all the time this could be very different from people like me who blog in their spare time. But if you’re constantly having to get up to pick up things you need it won’t make you very productive.

You do also want to make sure you have things in your space which make you happy. I don’t mean covering your desk or table with stuff everywhere, but if you’re going to be sat there for hours you want to feel happy. This could be a candle or incense, some photographs or quotes, or fresh flowers, whatever works best for you. If your working space makes you happy then you’ll want to spend time there as opposed to feeling like you have to be there.

Where do you work when you’re at home?

My workspace is a dumping ground for the kids, drives me insane. I shall have to clear it up and reclaim it as mine and mine only

Yes, very good advice to keep your phone away from you when you are working. I am guilty of getting sucked in to Instagram or FB. Mich x

Both of those are the worst for me but I am more likely to use my phone to do that so I have to put it far away x

This is something I really need to take the time to do with my workspace, as I often find myself picking up a random book to browse through or checking through my seemingly endless notebooks full of lists!

I totally needed this right now – it can be so easy to procrastinate and I am desperately trying to clear as much work as I can before the Easter weekend!

I have to admit my work space is my sofa, but not having any distractions around helps me write. So I make sure I shut off the TV and concentrate if I have lots to write!

I am a huge procrastinator and before I created a routine, I used to struggle with working from home. I love having a TV in the background as it helps me imagine being in an office.

I get that feeling, I like to have some noise but I find a podcast or music is less distracting than the TV for me x

I totally agree. The one that is the most relevant is keeping my work space tidy, I work much better when I do xx

Like you I have a dedicated office space in my flat but I still choose to work from the sofa – I really should use the space as I know I’ll be productive there x
