Going back a few years I had quite a lot of subscription boxes. Birchbox, Glossybox and Treatbox alongside one off’s every so often. I went a little overboard and ended up spending over £50 a month on these little monthly treats. And while the products inside were always nice, I didn’t end up getting value for money. I had a drawer crammed full of sample sized products. And I’m still trying to work my way through them all now.
But I didn’t play thes subscription box game very well. I overspent and didn’t cancel boxes when I started to lose interest. But if you manage your subscription boxes properly and choose the perfect one for you, you can save a lot of money.
One great thing about subscription boxes is that they allow you to trial things without spending loads of money. For example, beauty and lifestyle ones which allow you try out products. And they can reduce your need to go shopping if you opt for a food subscription box like Gousto or Hello Fresh. Played in the right way these boxes can save you money in the long run.
The only subscription box we have ongoing is Gousto which is our weekly food box. I’m going to do a whole separate post on food subscription boxes as I think they’re quite unique compared to more traditional subscription boxes.
You can get a sub box now for pretty much anything. Have a pet? You can get a box for them. Love a good tipple? You can get your favourite spirit sent out to you. Love reading? You can get a monthly book box sent to you. The market is pretty saturated but people seem to love them.
They are a nice little treat every month (0r however often you get them). My dad has The Gin Club box which arrives every 3 month’s and he gets so excited when he opens it up. I remember how excited I’d get when I got a great monthly beauty box full of products I really wanted to try. If you pick the best one for you it can be a pretty cheap way to give yourself a treat as opposed to going on a shopping trip.
I was lucky enough to get a Letterbox gift box for her* which was full of chocolate. And as soon as I opened it it felt truly special which is the feeling you want to get from a good sub box. There are quite a few different versions of the Letterbox gift box for her including a pamper version and a gin version. Both of which sound right up my street.
The chocolate included inside the gift box was such great quality. The golden bar and minty caramel were two of my favourites. Rich and creamy but not too over indulgent.
The other great thing about sub box’s is you can usually get them as one off’s as well. For example my Letterbox gift was a one off treat and while I enjoyed devouring the chocolate inside it would have made a great gift for someone.
The Gin Club box which my dad has was originally bought as a present for him. And he loved it so much that he carried it on which is just what you want. If someone is willing to spend their own money on carrying on something, you know they loved it!
With subscription boxes you can get the item shipped straight to the person who is going to receivee it. So there’s no additional postage charges to you like you would get if you bought and item and posted it to them. On Uopen you can choose for either a voucher to be posted to the recipiant so they can redeem the box when suits them. Or you can send the box directly to them.

I used to do the same as you – I had quite a few subs and ended up spending a lot when it wasn’t always worth it. I’m considering signing up to another soon but only the one and one I know I will remain interested in.
I really want to research into which ones are good, or get like one-offs more x
I can remember a few years ago when beauty boxes were extremely popular but they never really appealed to me.
However I do use Gousto occasionally. They are a little more expensive than if I were to do my food shop at the supermarket, however I’ve found the quality is really good so it’s worth it for me.
You’re so right, the quality and convenience outweigh the slightly more expensive price. I just like that I have a lack of waste with Gousto as I used to throw away so much fresh stuff as it’s hard to buy single things x
I have never had a subscription box, I’ve yet to see one I felt was a fit for me personally. You make a great point to consider what you’re getting and what you’re going to use for what you’re spending.
Such a great way to think about it! A reason for me to subscribe to a couple I think!
I love the idea of subscription boxes as I rarely treat myself so getting a nice little box of goodies to try and use is always exciting! I have to admit I have cancelled any boxes I was getting at the moment but have spotted a few I would love as gifts, perhaps for Christmas or my birthday! x
That’s the great thing about one-off boxes you can buy them as gifts or a treat for yourself without worrying about committing to the money every month x
Oo I love the contents of this box! I absolutely love subscription services because it always feels like a little gift to yourself 🙂
It’s a good idea that you can test items in trial sizes in these boxes so you can see if you really like it . I think you can also get good value for money too .
I’ve bought a couple of one-off subscription boxes that have contained something that I wanted or was a special edition . I have, however, bought subscriptions for friends birthdays and Christmas they work out great value for money
They do make great presents don’t they!? Especially if there’s something specific inside you like x
I would love a subscription box as a gift, but find them hard to justify otherwise.
As a gift I wouldn’t mind, but I do feel they are a waste of money to justify buying them for myself.
I’ve never signed up to a subscription box but I love the idea of getting a little treat each month. As long as I don’t go overboard and sign up to too many!
