*We were given a complimentary meal for two at Toby Carvery in exchange
for an honest review. As usual all thoughts and opinions are my own
Can you believe that the first time I headed to a Toby Carvey was only last year?! I don’t know how it managed to escape me, maybe because I was so fussy with vegetables it seemed a waste. But now my tastes have grown and matured everything’s changed. Recently we were invited along to the Toby Carvery in Aldenham which is less than a 10 minute drive from my house. So pretty perfect.
The location is both perfect as it’s so close to major roads and entryways into Watford. But it can also be not that ideal when it comes to parking as it can get very busy. Especially on a Sunday. We headed there at 6.45pm on a Thursday evening and had no troubles parking though. The actual Aldenham branch is pretty big with some outdoor seating, a decent bar area and a lot of tables inside.
After settling into our seats we grabbed some refillable soft drinks. I absolutely love it when places do this as I can drink quite a lot during a meal but hate ordering more than 2 drinks as it can work out so expensive. I’m going to be honest I had never actually looked at the menu before because it’s always instantly roast please. But this time we actually had a look and decided to grab a few starters as we were pretty hungry.
We picked up the Spicy Southern Fried Chicken Strips and some Garlic Bread. Both of the starters arrived pretty quickly and it was a great way to start the meal. The chicken strips were not too spicy which Luke was thankful for, and the BBQ sauce which came with it was the right balance of sweet and savoury. The garlic bread was on lovely crispy bread and was a great start.
Of course we went for the roast, it’s a staple when you head to the Toby Carvery. The queue looked pretty long when we joined to get our roast, but the guy carving the meat did a great job getting through everyone swiftly and it wasn’t long before we got to the right.
At the branch we went to the standard carvery was £7.99 but we went for king size at £9.98. This got us 2 Yorkshire puddings, 2 chipolata sausages and extra meat. I opted for turkey and gammon as it had been quite a long time since I’d had some gammon. Luke opting for beef and turkey, and with the king size plates the meat portions were really good.
Just as we got near the front a fresh batch of beef dripping roast potatoes were put out so of course these made it onto the plate alongside stuffing and veggies. I still find it a little strange that alongside all the vegetables they also do Mac and Cheese. No complaints from me as I blooming love it, but it always seemed like an odd addition to my plate. My eyes were definitely bigger than my belly. There was no way I was going to finish the plate of food in front of me. Even though everything I ate was absolutely delicious.
I had hoped to save room for dessert but there was no way my stomach was going to allow that. Next time I might have to forego starters and the king size just so I can try a dessert. One of the things I love about Toby Carvery is despite the biggest draw being a meat filled traditional roast there are plenty of options for veggies and vegans. So as long as your veggie friends don’t mind being around meat they’re covered.
A shout out has to go to the wonderful waitress we had (unfortunately I didn’t catch her name). She was so friendly and upbeat, such a people person. And what I loved was she had no idea I was there to review so you know that’s how she was all the time.

I love a roast at the Toby Carvery – I haven’t been for so long though! We usually go to the one in Hemel Hempstead.
I’ve never to been to any kind of carvery before, the portions look great value!
Never been to Toby Carvery but will keep an eye for it. The food they served looks absolutely delicious, I’m sure my husband would love to try visiting this place.
It’s worth it if you love a good Sunday roast but maybe don’t have the time or energy to cook the whole thing yourself as it’s such good value x
Oh my goodness, we love Toby Carvery – their vegetarian option is just delicious too! The gravy is something else 🙂 Kaz
That’s good to know that their veggie options are good x
I must admit I almost always visit Toby Carvey on a sunday and its for their delicious roast, its delicious.
I haven’t had a roast dinner for ages, but now the weather is changing it is time to start having them again. We tend to avoid Sundays as it is so much busier!!
You’re so right, it’s not really a summery thing x
Any day of the week is a good day for a roast dinner. I’ve been making use of their breakfasts to meet up with mums after the school run
I need to give their breakfast a try as I’ve yet to do that x
I absolutely love a Toby Carvery and totally agree you can go any day of the week.
I love a roast dinner, definitely not just for Sunday’s. I don’t think I’ve had one from Toby’s though, will keep an eye out for one close
