The Best Money Saving Apps For Booking Travel

I absolutely love to travel and will go away as much as I can afford to do so. Other than a few pre-booked trips I’m cutting down on the travels for a year or so while we’re house saving. But when I do go away I’m always on look out for ways to save money and get the best value for money. This is both when it comes to booking my travels but also while I am away. Thankfully I do manage to get quite a few deals on flights due to my British Airways American Express card. Here’s how I’ve managed to get loads of (almost) free flights. If you’re thinking of booking a trip, or want some tips on how to save money here are some of the best money saving apps for booking travel which have helped me save loads.

Money saving apps for booking travel: Flights- Skyscanner

Of course I had to start with the number one flight app that you probably already know about; Skyscanner. I never book a flight without first checking the Skyscanner app. This is great for seeing the best days and months to fly if you know what location you’re heading off to. But I love to use it to find destinations. If I know the days or time I want to go away, I search for flights to anywhere and work out where’s best to go.

This is how I settled on Oslo for September, although I have to do lots of planning to make sure the trip is also affordable.

Saving money on a particular flight with Hopper

Do you know where you want to go and roughly when? Then Hopper can help you buy your flights at exactly the right time with their price predictions. We all know how heartbreaking it can be buying flights that you saw for a third of the price a few weeks ago. Or booking them and finding them £50 cheaper a few months later.

For most of us there’s no way of knowing when flight prices may change, but Hopper have 95% accuracy up to 1 year in advance when it comes to predicting the prices of flights. Once you make your search the site will predict when prices will increase and by how much. This way you can plan the best time for you to click buy.

Travelling via train? Get a railcard

There are railcards for almost anything now. If you’re a bit younger there’s the 16-25 railcard and now there’s a millenial railcard for 26-30 year old’s which I have. With my railcard it cost me about £30. But I get money off of all train travel I book including in London (off-peak) as I have it connected to my Oyster Card.

I only really got into London off-peak so after work or at the weekends, so for me it made sense to get a travel card. It also means if I make the odd trip further afield and book my trains in advance I can use this. You don’t even need to worry about remembering the physical card. The Railcard app shows everything you need including a QR code to scan if you need to use it.

Money saving apps for booking travel by bus and trains with Omio

If you’re looking to take a train ride on a weekend away in the UK. Or save loads of money and get an overnight coach to Europe, or a Eurostar/ train then Omio is the best way to see the best prices. You can also search for flights on Omio but in most cases the train or bus is going to work out cheaper.

This is a great option if you’re going travelling around Europe and using public transport. This way you’ll find the best ways to travel around and eliminate spending where possible. All you need to do is search for your starting and end points, and then the date of travel. You might be surprised what the cheapest method of travel is. Plus it will help you plan the times of travel.

I have to admit I didn’t know that there were different apps to help you save money when booking travel. I will totally have to download these! A rail card can make such a difference with train travel these days as well. A must have for people who use trains regually!

Using a family railcard has saved me so much money. It usually ends up cheaper to travel as a family that it would be if I was travelling on my own

We always look at Skyscanner to benchmark prices and it’s a great little app – didn’t know about the others though!

I always try to remember to use incognito mode/remove cookies when buying flights etc. They apparently raise prices through tracking you coming back onto site! xx

I’m told with Sky Scanner, one of the best things to do is constantly delete your cookies when looking for flights, otherwise the deals are not so good?

    • Rhian Westbury says:

Yes deleting your cookies is always important otherwise airlines know that you really want tickets to a particular place so they’ll keep hiking them up x
