*I was gifted a pair of tickets to one of the shows but all thoughts and
opinions are my own. The rest of the shows I paid for myself.
I’m a huge fan of the theatre and love going to shows, but in the past 6 month’s it seemed to have slowed down. As we’re trying to save money I’ve been reigning back my spending. But then it just so happened that quite a few good deals came up online at the same time. And I was offered tickets to another show so it meant that I got to see three shows in the space of a week.
I went to see two of the shows solo which absolutely doesn’t bother me. Sometimes I find that you can get better seats if you’re going alone so that’s just what I did. Here’s a rundown of what I saw and what I thought of the shows.
This is the show that sparked this whole post. Encore tickets invited me along to see the show and I jumped at the chance/ Come From Away is an uplifting (yet on occassion emotional) show around the time of 9/11. It follows the real-life events of the residents of Gander in Canada who took 7,000 air passengers stranded after the air space was closed on 9/11. It follows the Newfoundland community who took those stranded into their lives.
The show itself is 100 minutes long and runs straight through without a break. For this show I think this works so well as there’s no logical middle part. The 12 cast members also play around 84 different characters between them and it’s done in such a clever way by switching up certain obvious pieces of clothing or accessories. The set is pretty plain without masses of prop or backdrop changes. It’s amazing how much you can get from just moving around chairs.
As it’s based on real-life events I really got the emotion from the characters and it was done so tastefully with some very funny moments. But then some tender and more sensitive moments. This was such a great show, and new for 2019 so definitely worth a watch.
I’d been dying to see Waitress for ages as it features the music and lyrics of Sara Bareilles which has been nominated for four Tony Awards. The show follows the story of Jenna Hunterson who is a waitress and pie maker whose looking to start a new life after getting pregnant by her not so great husband. For the entire show I either had a smile on my face or was laughing as it was so well done. But it really showed the emotions that Jenna was going through as she was pregnant and facing all the challenges that were thrown on her.
When I first booked my tickets I had no idea Joe Sugg was due to start in the show. With a YouTube career and being on Stricting Come Dancing I didn’t know if this was more a novelty or not. But I had to admit he played such an amazing part and was so funny in the part he played. This show is one of the best things I’ve seen in a long time and if you haven’t been before you should definitely book up.
Now I remember reading The Secret Diary of Adrian Mole when I was a kid so was intrigued to know it was going to be tuened into a musicial. The show follows Adrian Mole through the trials and tribulations of everyday life from navigating his first love to his parents splitting up. The whole show was done incredibly well with four kids in the show who all did an amazing job considering they were all 12 or 13 years old.
This is definitely more of a comedic show and I found myself laughing for quite a lot of the show. Basing a musicial around a story that most people know can be tricky but they did a great job. It’s on the West End for a limited time so if you want to go be quick.

I have never been to a theatre show but Waitress definitely sounds interesting. Seems like a unique story too!
Now I would love to see the Secret Diary of Adrian Mole – I loved those books when I was young
I was a huge Adrain Mole fan as a teenager, reading and re-reading the books time and time again. My eldest has just started reading the books so I’d love to take her along to the show
I’m a big musicals fan, and so are my kids, and we are lucky enough to live in London, so go to the theatre relatively often, so it’s funny that I haven’t seen any of these three! I know that Come from Away is supposed to be fantastic (my husband and daughter really enjoyed it) and my daughter really wants to see Waitress too, which sounds like great fun. I think Adrian Mole is finishing soon, but it’s supposed to be really good too – I remember the books and saw the play many, many years ago!
You should try and squeeze Adrian Mole in before it shuts, the other two should be around for a while x
I’d love to see Waitress! There’s a woman in Iowa called the “Pie Lady” and “Ms. American Pie” because of her memoirs, recipes, and pie-baking classes. He blog is the “World Needs More Pie” She’s awesome and has made me partial to any sweet soul who loves pie. xx
Oh wow that’s so cool! It’s really make me want to bake a pie haha x
I love the theatre but don’t get to go very often. I’d love to see The Secret Diary of Adrian Mole.
I haven’t been to the theatre in years, not since I’ve had kids really! It’s definitely something I need to start doing again.
I love theatre shows and love reading about new recommendations. I have not been to these shows but will definitely check them out.
I can’t remember the last time I went to theatre and it’s such a sad thought! Now I’ve read this post I want to book some tickets ASAP! Waitress sounds like my cup of tea!
You should have a search around online as there are some great deals out there x
I know what you mean about needing to rein back on the costs and things like theatre losing out, but it seems a shame not to go and enjoy them. Glad you found some deals – I like the sound of Waitress.
I haven’t been to the theatre in months but there are a few shows I really want to see. I used to love the Diary of Adrian Mole but not sure how it would tranfer to the stage, so I am intrigued x
I felt just like that as I wasn’t sure about the musical aspect, but it was great! x
