Now August is over does that mean summer is officially over?! We had that very hot week back in July which I was not prepared for. But August has been a little lacklustre with lots of grey sky and rain which isn’t fun.
I’ve had a pretty great month though with plenty of fun times to be had. Here’s what I got up to in August.
I haven’t spent anywhere near as much time in London this year as I usually do. But August saw three trips into Central which was a lot of fun. On Wednesday 7th I went into London to attend two very exciting events. The first was during the afternoon with Buyagift and Brigit’s Bakery to celebrate afternoon tea week. I have wanted to do the London bus afternoon tea for ages and I’m so glad to have ticked it off my list. Plus I got to meet a fabulous group of ladies. In the evening I met up with my friend and we went to the new Gingerline immersive dining experience. I won’t say very much but we did have a very fun evening.
In the middle of the month I headed to Portobello Road with my parents and Luke for a gin afternoon. As a delayed birthday present we went to Gintonica which is part of the Portobello Road distillery where we made our gin last month. We all tried a selection of different gins and then headed out for dinner which was such a nice Saturday.
I had the Friday off before bank holiday weekend where I had hoped to go into London. I wanted to pick up some cheap theatre tickets through Today Tix but they had sold out so quickly. So I didn’t head into London, but I did manage to get cheap tickets to see Waitress for mid September. So I can pop back then.
Luke was really ill at the start of the month. So much so that we had to have an emergency appointment in A&E which wasn’t fun. Thankfully after 5-7 days he was back to his normal self, although sadly it did mean we missed our trip to Bristol. One day we’ll get there!
A week or so into the month I was finally able to give blood again. My iron levels have been pretty low over the years so I was happy that it was at a healthy level to allow me to donate. After the session we spent the rest of the day with Luke’s parents which was nice.
Mid August I had a lovely catch up meal with a few friends where we stuffed our faces in Bella Italia which was very nice. I really treasure those evenings of catch ups and laughter so much. At the start of bank holiday weekend my brother and his fiance popped round and we had a lovely evening together as a family. It did help that we ordered Nando’s and I didn’t have to worry about dinner.
On the Sunday of bank holiday weekend we met up with two of Luke’s friends to tackle another escape room. As a foursome we’ve done two before, and we continued our winning streak with this one. It was a really fun game with Handmade Mystery’s – I’ll be doing a full post on it soon! After our game we headed to Kings Cross for food at Cut and Grind and the meal was amazing. I had some of the best steak I’ve ever had and some yummy cocktails. Bank holidays done right.
Seeing as we’ve been saving for a few months now we spent an evening looking into our savings and projecting where we should be at the end of February 2020. Thankfully we’ve been really good and we’re going to be in an even better position than we had originally thought. I really appreciate how lucky we are being able to move back into my parents and pay just a modest rent.
We headed to see a mortgage advisor in August just to get an idea of whether that we were looking at was about right. The lady who helped us was great and we’ve done the hard part now. I’m just hoping that my wage change at work happens quickly as that will make a massive impact on how much of a mortgage we’ll be able to get.
I only went to the cinema once in August as I’m going to be honest there doesn’t seem to be much on at the moment. I’m hoping it picks up as I’m keen to make the most of my card. After we started watching the Fast & Furious movies we went to see Hobbs & Shaw. It’s a light hearted movie and quite cheesey but I really enjoyed it and I’m glad we went. We’re up to number 5 of the movies so in September we need to wrap up the rest.
I have made up my lack of cinema trips by finishing two TV shows. I started watching Good Girls on Netflix as a quick easy watch and I binged both seasons in about 10 days. Then I moved onto Fleabag which was done in just two days. I enjoyed the later so much I’ve booked to see the live show at the cinema next week.
On the Saturday of August bank holiday weekend we headed to Portsmouth for a day at Victorious Festival. I picked up the tickets back in March as part of Luke’s birthday present as Bloc Party were headlining and he loves them. We had a really fun day as we caught up with my friend and her fiance who live down there. We saw Lewis Capaldi who I now have fallen in love with just a little bit more. And the whole day was made so nice as it was sunny. Unlike our trip there last year which was a massive wash out!

It must be so exciting working out what you can afford for your mortage! I hope it all goes well for you and well done with your wage change! Wow I bet Luke being ill was scary! Glad to hear he was soon back to normal.
Yeah it is so exciting, also very nervewracking as it’s such a huge thing but I’m way more excited x
Totally enjoyed reading your round up summer post, looking like you had so much fun in London with the 3 trips. So glad you enjoyed Hobbs and Shaw, we watched it too and enjoyed it as well as I am a huge fan of Johnson and Statham.
I am totally the same, them 2 being in the movie was the selling point for me x
I am so glad Luke is better now, that must have been terrifying! I agree with you about the cinema in August, there really didn’t seem to be much on.
I think everything in the cinema over summer is aimed at kids cause of the school holidays x
I know what you mean about London, we have not been half as much as we used to do. Great news about the house savings though xx
Fingers crossed you get your wage change sooner rather than later. Best of luck with everything xxx
Thanks xx
Must be truly exciting to be working together towards buying your new home, and really looking forward to seeing more of your posts about this journey you and Luke are on.
Very exciting August. I’m so excited for you as you work towards purchasing your home. We bought our house last year and it was so exciting for us.
Sounds like you’ve had a busy but fun month. I do love the summer for catching up with family and friends, whilst being to explore days out etc
I’d love to see Bloc Party, they are one of my favourite bands š Good luck on finding a mortgage x
Congrats on your house Rhian, thanks for sharing!
