How to Save Money & Help The Environment With Too Good To Go

too good to go magic bag

Did you know that 1/3 of all food produced is wasted?! Some of that might come from dosmetic cases, people at home throwing things out. But a lot comes from stores and restaurants who make food but then don’t sell it. Too Good To Go are a company trying to do something about it.

So many times I walk past places- particually bakeries – and see a lot of food left close to closing time. For most places if they food doesn’t sell that day it’s dumped as it can’t be sold as fresh the next day. But it’s not just the physically food which goes to waste, it’s all the resources that went into making it including water and labour. So when we waste good it has a harmful effect on the environment. It’s actually responsible for 8% of global greenhouse gas emissions which is crazy.

A few months back I discovered an app called ‘Too Good To Go‘. And their plan is to help combat some of the food waste I mentioned about.

What is a ‘Magic Bag’ or ‘Magic Box’?

Stores can become part of the movement and create a ‘Magic Bag’ or ‘Magic Box’.  Most of the food that is deemed as ‘food waste’ and no longer fresh is perfectly edible and delicious food. But stores and restaurants still have to throw it away. For example bakeries that bake from fresh can’t re-sell anything the next day. Or restaurants that didn’t sell all of the food they pre-prepared.

Some of the food which would otherwise be wasted and thrown away is collected into a bag or box and sold off through the app for a fraction of the price. It really depends on your location as to what stores/ restaurants participate in the Too Good To Go app. Wenzels, Yo Sushi, Lola’s Cupcakes and Morissons are four local ones to me that are always on the app.

how too good to go works

What do you get with Too Good To Go orders?

That’s part of the magic or excitement you don’t know. I’ve had quite a few bags from Wenzels which cost £2.99 but are filled with so many products that even if I pass on a few items I don’t like it’s still worth it. The first time I got a premium sandwich which was worth £3 on it’s own. And then another 6/7 items on top of that. So it’s also a great way to save money on food.

It really depends on what sells during the day in a place. And what’s left over. So if you’re a very fussy person then this might not be for you. Morrisons do a Good To Go ‘Magic Box’ which is generally fully of fruit and veg. Although I have seen chocolates, meats, cheeses and bakery items in the boxes. As I’m quite fussy with fruit and veg it’s not worth me getting the box as I don’t want to just waste the food I’ve looked to save.

How much money does it cost?

The price of the bag or box varies from retailer to retailer but they’re generally between £2.50 and £5 depending on the original value of the items. The Wenzels bags I usually get are £2.99, Yo!Sushi is £3.50 and Lola’s Cupcakes is £3.99. But you’ll always get a value of products far far higher than what you paid. If you use a lot of fruit and veg then the Morrison’s box can work out very good value as you get a lot of this.

As I said above I’ve had a few bags from Wenzels now and have always been really happy with the contents, especially when we’ve got fresh bread!

Have you ever tried Too Good To Go?

This is such a good idea! I always think it is such a waste of food when it is just thrown away.

Many people could benefit from this

I think this is an awesome initiative! I wonder if anything like this is going on in the U.S., and, if not, what would it take to get this started. Far too many people out there that go without when there’s perfectly good food for them to eat.

What a fabulous concept! I have heard of the Morrisons box previously but didn’t realise it was wider spread. I will be checking this out, trying to seriously cut back this year and food waste is one of my pet hates! Sim x

This app sounds like a great idea! I know good number of restaurants here do wind up throwing things out, while a few donate whatever is left to the needy or homeless.

This is such a brilliant idea. I haven’t been to Morrisons recently but will definitely consider trying one out if I am nearby.

I think this is a brilliant idea – saving money and reducing waste! I’ll have to check if the scheme is running around where I live

I love this app!! Unfortunately there aren’t many places super local to us that offer it at the moment but we have tried a few and have always been really impressed. My husband sometimes picks up a bag from a local coffee shop on a Sunday evening and takes the contents (sandwiches etc) to work the next day along with any cakes/biscuits to share with some guys he works with.

Its also always worth checking if you are traveling as apparently lots of the train station cafes etc are on their too! Glad to hear you have been enjoying using it too, its such a great app!

This sounds like a really good idea. It can really help those juggling finances to save money and also businesses to avoid having excessive amounts of waste and still bring in money for products that would otherwise be thrown away.
