but all talk of hot dogs is my own
We’re big fans of hot dogs and as they’re so long-lasting we tend to always have a tin of them in the cupboard. Previously it would have been a case of, there’s nothing else in, let’s have hot dogs. Or maybe I don’t fancy making something overly elaborate, so let’s have hot dogs. You get the picture. And now more than ever they’ve come in super handy. So when I was sent some tins from Ye Olde Oak to top up my collection I was very happy. And it got me thinking what else you could do with hot dogs. Yes, hot dogs taste amazing in a toasted bun with caramelised onions and ketchup. But there’s so much more you can do.
One thing I struggle with is making food from the dregs of my cupboards. I like to be prepared and have specific ingredients for my meals. But with everything, as it is sometimes you need to get creative with your meals. We always have a few packs of pasta in, and actually haven’t eaten it too much during the lockdown. And our cupboards always have the staples like chopped tomatoes, passata, herbs/ spices, garlic puree and Worcester sauce etc.
These those ingredients alone can make a pretty great pasta sauce. But all you need to do is chop up a few hot dogs and mix them throughout and you’ve got a meaty pasta with plenty of texture.
I love making homemade pizzas as you can totally customise the toppings and what you have on them. And hot dogs make a great topping for your pizza. You can slice them up quite thinly and even a single one goes a long way. I’m usually quite fussy when it comes to pizza toppings and don’t like to overcomplicate things. But I made a cheese, caramelised red onion, chicken and hot dog pizza last week which was great. You can’t see too well from the picture as the hot dog pieces are under a layer of cheese, because why not?! But I can testify that it tasted amazing.
I’m a massive fan of anything which infuses bread and melted cheese. This may be why I love the humble toastie so much. But you can simply pimp up your toastie by slicing up a hot dog and adding a few rashers of bacon alongside your cheese. I’m really trying to get into the habit of eating proper breakfasts and lunches which have become a little hard when you’re at home all the time with a constant supply of snacking food. And a toastie is a great filling way to have a proper meal.
There’s so much more you can do with the hot dog including:

A tin of hot dogs is so versatile and can be used in so many ways, adding to a pizza is popular here
Ohhh I’m totally down for a hotdog toastie! That sounds lovely 🙂
We actually love hotdog spaghetti, where we cut up the hotdogs, pierce them with dry spaghetti, and then cook. Theyre lots of fun and taste great 🙂
Who knew you could do so much with tinned hot dogs! I have to admit I don’t think we have any in the house as I’ve never really though of buying them but perhaps I need to add them to next weeks shopping.
It’s one of those things you can just keep in the cupboard for ages x
My girls love these hot dogs, im not the biggest fan of them, but they love them, putting them on pizza is one of those ideas that is “why have i never done this before”,
My son loves hotdogs so this is a great post with some ideas. I’ve done the hotdog spaghetti before he thought that was cool
Such a great idea to make a pizza with hotdogs, I didn’t think of that
Love how versatile it is but as an italian I cannot have hot dogs in my pasta! haha
I am so with you. Bread and melted chees wins my vote most days. Not really thought to use hot dogs as a pizza topping, I wonder what the kids would think.
My family totally love hot dogs and we love to either have it in the traditional way of eating it in a roll or baked in buns. Your pizza looks so yummy, I could take a bite into it right now.
Yeah you can’t beat a toasted bun, onions and ketchup with a hot dog x
I love hot dogs for tea, such a quick and easy meal for the family.
Ah I had no idea hot dogs were so versatile! Never tried hot dogs on pizza but we make our own pizzas all the time, definitely going to try this as a topping.
My son loves to add choped up hot dogs to his pizza and I’ve never thought of adding them to a toastie but that is such a good idea! Mich x
I never knew you could do so many things with a tin of hot dogs! We usually just have them in hot dog buns with ketchup, but I am loving the pasta and pizza ideas.
My kids love hot dogs, but never really thought of adding them to a recipe! Great idea
Ooh I like the idea of putting them on top of pizza that sounds yummy xxx
