While we are in the middle of a pandemic, many people have been forced to look closely at their finances and make some difficult decisions. The financial situation right now is dire, there is no denying that, but trying to work out what to do about it is important if you want to remain afloat in your finances going forward.

Personal debt levels increase in times like this. Without work paying the bills and without a wealthy family to lean on, you naturally turn to borrow money. If you’re already trying to pay debts, you may be wondering is debt settlement really worth it? There are a lot of scary questions cropping up right now, and you need to try to get yourself out of debt if you want to succeed financially. Below, we’ve got five ways that you can get out of debt and finally feel some comfort when the financial belt squeezes.

Put A Plan In Place

You need to stop hating yourself for the debt you are in right now. Instead, you need a plan to get out of it. You need to write all of your debts down and list them from smallest to largest. Once you have done this, you can review the interest rates and put them in order of priority.

Stop Borrowing

We know it’s hard not to, but you have to stop borrowing money to pay more money. Taking from Peter to pay Paul isn’t going to get you out of debt; it’s just going to create more that you then have to pay off. If you cannot afford something, pick up the phone and speak to your creditors. Make minimal token payments to show loyalty while you fix up the most urgent debts.

Look To Consolidate

While you still need to have decent credit to consolidate your loans, you could make a big difference to your monthly outgoings if all of your debts are put into one pot with one repayment each month. You’ll reduce your interest rate each month, too, which will make a big difference to the health of your bank account.

Use Cash

Where you can, spend cash not credit. Cards are a little dangerous in that the money isn’t visible and you can’t see where it’s going. You can’t see the numbers, which can make you ignorant to what you’re spending. With cash, you have a physical thing to leave your hand – and that is harder to ignore.

Slow Down

We’re in the middle of a pandemic, so it’s very likely that your online purchase rate is shooting through the roof as you cannot go out or book vacations. You need to slow down on your spending and use this time to pay down personal debt. Look at it this way: when the lockdowns lift, your finances will be healthier and you’ll be able to spend what you can afford and no less.

Debt can cripple you. Get out of it as fast as you can in a sensible way.
