Silk Hair Accessories- Are They Worth It?

Silk hair scrunchies

I’ve had long hair for as long as I can remember. And the one thing I have to do before going to sleep is tie up my hair. If I don’t it gets matted, hot, and just in the way. I’d be the person who always had a hair scrunchie on her wrist and would keep going until it literally disintegrated. So when I was introduced to silk scrunchies last Christmas I thought I’d give them a go. Sure I’d heard about silk pillows which were meant to be great for your skin and hair. But I’d not really done much research into silk hair accessories.

When I first started researching I was shocked at how expensive they seemed to be. £30 on average for a set of 3 or 4 hair scrunchies seems extreme to me. But then I stumbled across Only Curls who are predominately a brand with a mission to encourage curly hair girls to ditch chemicals and straighteners and embrace their natural curls. But on top of their haircare lines, they do silk hair accessories. The trio set of mini scrunchies* are just £10.

Why are silk hair accessories great for your hair?

Normal elasticated hairbands can restrict your hair and be an absolute pain to get out of your hair. I remember mornings when I would be trying to pry a hairband out of my hair for what felt like forever. Trying not to pull hair out at the same time. Silk hair scrunchies don’t put this pressure on the hair. This is because the satin scrunchies cut down on friction and tension on your hair compared to normal hairbands. Because of the lack of friction and tension, they’re proven to reduce split ends.

Satin is also designed to decrease frizz in the hair so you’re less likely to wake up with crazy-looking hair. This is one of the biggest drawers of silk pillowcases because your whole head is exposed to silk. Plus as they’re so soft they’re incredibly easy to get out of the hair. I find they glide out without having to tug or pull them like regular hair bands. On top of that no hairband creases!

My thoughts after a year of using silk hair scrunchies

I have been using silk hairbands for the past year now and I could never go back. First, let’s talk about how my hair has loved them. I’ve found a lot fewer breakages in my hair. Especially first thing in the morning when I pull the scrunchie out and brush my hair. I used to find that hairbands put a lot of pressure on my hair and inevitably I’d pull out a few strands each time I took out the band. For me this has been the biggest change, I don’t have to fight a battle first thing in the morning as the scrunchie just glides out of my hair.

I’m one of the lucky ones who didn’t get a whole lot of split ends in general. But my hairdresser has also been very impressed that they’ve decreased even further. Another win for my hair health.

I’ve found that the silk hairbands have lasted very well and I’ve only just had to buy another pack of them. Which considering I wear my hair up 75% of the time is a real win.

Other silk hair accessories

When I bought my last pack of hair ties from Only Curls I picked up their Satin Sleep Turban to try.  At just £16 it’s a steal compared to other brands. As the satin turban encases your hair all night your whole head will benefit from reduced frizz and I definitely notice it after sleeping in it. For me who has a lot of hair, I find getting it in the turban and off the back of my neck actually cools me down while I’m sleeping which is another win.

As less moisture is absorbed by the pillow the turban ensures the hair stays hydrated and healthy. So if you have dry hair this could be a great overnight alternative. And of course, if you have curly hair the turban will keep your curls intact overnight.

Have you tried silk hair accessories before?

I’ve never tried silk accessories before but I definitely think I need to! My hair gets in the way so much especially at night.

I have very fine hair. If I don’t wear a scrunchie at night it is awful in the morning. I’ve never tried a silk scrunchie, it sounds like it would make a great stocking stuffer.

The only curls ones are so affordable compared to brands like silk, but they really have changed my hair x

It has been a long time since I wore my hair back, but my daughter uses them and due to her illness even brushing hair can be tiring. She has been using silk scrunchies for a while now and found them better and easier to use than normal ones

These sound fab, I find my hair gets tangled into hairbands and then I have to cut them out which isn’t ideal

I have really fine hair and some hairbands break it when I take them out. I will have to have a look at silk scrunchies as I think these will be a lot gentler for my hair! I had no idea they existed, thank you 🙂
