Located in front of the Brisbane river, is the Queensland Cultural Center that houses many of the art venues, galleries, museums in Brisbane. You can visit the QAGOMA (Queensland Art Gallery and Gallery of Modern Art) which lies adjacent to the CBD to see exhibitions of famous artists like Renoir, Picasso, and Van Gogh or to see the vast collection of modern and contemporary Australian, indigenous Australian, Asian, and Pacific artwork. Admission for both the art galleries is completely free. There are free tours suitable for a family because they usually run for 30 minutes. The tours of both the galleries start at 2.00 PM daily. Also, don’t forget to visit the Queensland Museum to see exhibitions on wildlife and Indigenous history; it includes stories about dinosaurs and also a science centre for little curious minds.
Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary is the largest koala sanctuary in the world and it provides a home to 130 koalas. It is also the first such sanctuary that was built to care for the koalas in the world. There are 70 species of animals like kangaroos, wild lorikeets, platypus, owls, snakes, echidnas, possums, wallabies, cassowaries, and so on. So, it is one of the best places to visit with your family in Brisbane. You can reach the Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary easily from the CBD by bus. But looking at these animals only is not enough, you have to see a show that features these animals to get the full excitement of the trip. There are many shows; Wild Lorikeet Feeding, Free Flight Raptor Show, Touch a Koala, and Sheepdog Show.
Streets Beach is the perfect place to swim in the city of Brisbane. That’s right! This beach is located inside the city overlooking the beautiful Brisbane River. It is also the only beach that is inside a city and man-made in Australia. The Street Beach is natural at its best with white sands, blue waters, and tropical plants. Before having fun on the beach, ladies can have the hair removal treatment in advance and make you more confident when wearing a bikini. There are two more places for you to enjoy with your kids- the Boat Pool and Aquativity. Boat Pool is a pool perfect for people of all ages. It is safe and there are lifeguards here but it is best to keep an eye on your little ones. The Aquativity is an interactive water park that allows your kids to play with waters, fountains, and have outdoor showers.
The Workshop’s Rail Museum was opened in 2002 as a part of the Queensland Museum Network. It is a must-visit in Brisbane with your children as a family tour because it served as the workplace for over 3000 railway workers. Today, it displays the proud history of the railway system in Queensland with interactive exhibitions with tours that run twice a day. You can learn about the locomotives, different types of carriages and your kids can enjoy the model railway, which is the largest model railway that displays Queensland at the indoor playground within the museum. Some of the other highlights in the Workshop’s Rail Museum are A10 (the oldest working locomotive in Australia built-in 1865), Vice Regal Carriage, and the Nippers Railway.
The Brisbane Botanic Gardens is located at the foot of Mount Coot-tha which is the tallest mountain in Brisbane. It was opened in 1976 and today, it is open for the public daily for free admission. You can visit the Mt Coot-tha Visitor Centre for information about the Brisbane Botanic Gardens and join guided tours in the garden as well. The main highlights of the Brisbane Botanic Gardens are Tropical Display Dome, Japanese Garden, Bonsai House, Exotic Rainforest, Australian Rainforest, Fern House
Arid Zone and Cactus House. Another attraction just adjacent to the garden is the Sir Thomas Brisbane Planetarium. You can also have a meal or an ice cream with your kids at the Garden Cafe after you have finished exploring the Brisbane Botanic Garden.
Strawberry Fields on the Sunshine Coast is a must-visit family destination in Brisbane for all those who do and don’t love strawberries. This is because you will come up liking strawberries after visiting the Strawberry Fields. Your kids can pick fresh strawberries, and later on, you can enjoy a cup of coffee and strawberry delicacies (pancakes, ice cream, chocolate coated strawberries, and much more!) in a cafe within the site.
Do you and your kids want to try out a dolphin feeding activity? Then you can head to the Tangalooma Island and feed the bottlenose dolphins that visit the shores of Tangalooma Island Resort every evening! Ferry services are available from Brisbane to the Tangalooma Jetty on Moreton Island four times a day. It will take more than one hour to reach the island but it will be worth it. But only the guests of Tangalooma Island Resort who stay overnight are allowed to take part in this activity. Those who have Brisbane Cruise packages are also considered as guests. Currently, there are about 13 bottlenose dolphins recorded to be coming to have food or to play in the shores nearby. However, you are not allowed to touch the dolphins in any manner while feeding.
