No matter how careful you try to be, sometimes you can’t help dripping or spilling food or drink of your clothes and then you start to worry that it will leave a stain.

While you might be able to reduce the damage by wiping and blotting the area with a tissue, it won’t be enough to prevent a stain from forming. If you are near a sink then maybe you can try to wash out the stain with water, but resist the temptation to use soap on the stain as this can actually make things worse.

If you are at home, don’t be tempted to use commercial stain removing products on clothes that are dry clean only. These products are particularly harsh and are designed for use on machine washable clothes only. They can damage and fade delicate fibres so keep them away from clothes that cannot be washed in the machine.

Avoid common cleaning myths

There are a lot of old wives’ tales that are still believed when it comes to removing stains from clothes. For example, using hair spray to get rid of lipstick and ink stains. Hairspray isn’t any good for stain removal and using it can leave you with even more staining and marks to get rid of!

We are quite used to being asked to remove red wine stains and food stains from area rugs, sofa covers, and large throws, and from large French windows and conservatory curtains.

Quite often you can manage to clean cotton duvet covers in the washing machine, but anything larger and heavier may be too much for your washing machine to cope with.
